Job overview

Are you a qualified EFL Teacher? Do you want to help us give our students a great time in class, on trips and in activities?

Your motivation, professionalism and flexibility will ensure that they, and you, enjoy the whole summer school experience.

We are looking for EFL Teachers for Summer 2019 to join our team! We offer a friendly, professional, rewarding environment and have positions available from the beginning of July.

For more than 40 years, we've been helping young people from all over the world to improve their spoken English, get a taste of UK culture and gain valuable life experience. We take great care in choosing our residential centres, which are all based at beautiful and prestigious boarding schools, and we take equal care in choosing the staff we would like to look after these young people.

The Role

Our teachers deliver fun and effective lessons that promote active engagement of all students to improve their confidence, accuracy and fluency in spoken English. There is a pre-planned syllabus and materials along with strong academic support.

It is very important that our students are happy and well-looked after in all areas of the programme and they really enjoy interacting with their teachers outside of the classroom as well as in lessons. That is why we are looking for EFL teachers who not only have a passion for teaching but who will fulfil their supervision, airport, recreation, excursion and welfare duties as enthusiastically and professionally as they do their academic ones.

Our Schools

We take great care choosing our schools and we look at everything they have to offer from their location to the range of facilities:

- St Georges School, Ascot

- Epsom College

- St. John's School, Leatherhead

- Rugby School

Who you are

In addition to the essential/desirable qualifications and experience detailed below, you will have:

  • a willingness to throw yourself into the role
  • the desire to help create a great experience for our students
  • a genuine interest in the safety, welfare and happiness of our students
  • the ability to motivate and stimulate the students both inside and out of the classroom
  • enthusiasm and a sense of humour
  • flexibility and commitment to the team

How we support you

  • a comprehensive pre-course paid induction
  • an experienced Senior Staff team (mostly from mainstream state or independent schools)
  • a non-teaching Director of Studies and a Senior Teacher
  • a pre-planned syllabus and materials
  • extensive EFL resources
  • structured observations with oral and written feedback

What our staff say

"It's been a very good year, once again! I always enjoy the experience, because of the great people I get to work with, the well-run course and the excellent location and facilities." Mike 2001 - 2018

"Excellent support from management and staff. Students seemed to have a really positive experience and it was really great fun and rewarding to teach them." Mark 2017 - 2018

"Thoroughly enjoyable three weeks! Excellent facilities, excellent staff and excellent kids! Would certainly love to be a part of another TVSS course in the future!" Paul - 2017

"TVSS gives you a chance to progress, experience responsibility and work to your strengths. I have really enjoyed seeing the students' progress and I love the way that TVSS looks for new opportunities and encourages returning staff to get involved in those opportunities. I would not work for any other summer school." Lorraine 2014 - 2017

About Thames Valley Summer Schools

About us

For more than 40 years, we've been helping young people from all over the world to improve their spoken English, get a taste of UK culture and gain valuable life experience. To date over 60,000 students have spent the summer with us on one of our high quality, British Council accredited courses! We take great care in choosing our residential centres, which are all based at beautiful and prestigious boarding schools, and we take equal care in choosing the staff we would like to look after these young people.

A modern approach

All languages are constantly changing and English is no exception. With this in mind, we go to great lengths to make sure that our courses are constantly being updated. To do this, we have a team of language experts with over fifty years' experience between them. Their task is to make sure that students learn the most current form of English, and that it’s learnt in the most stimulating and enjoyable way.

Course material is re-written on average every four years and it includes a TVSS Trinity Student Book that is unique to us. Covering all sorts of up-to-the-minute topics like film, sport, music and technology, it also reinforces what students will be seeing and doing on excursions.

Locations

We take enormous care in choosing our centres. For Young Learner residential students, only prestigious boarding schools are considered and we look at everything they have to offer - from their location through to their range of facilities. In addition, our summer schools could hardly be better situated. Whichever centre you choose, you'll find yourself within easy reach of some of England's most historic towns and cities.

  • St. George's, Ascot
  • Epsom College
  • St. John’s, Leatherhead
  • Rugby School

Our Staff

In overall charge of each centre is a Course Director, whose job it is to ensure the successful management of the course. The Recreation Director has responsibility for planning and delivering the recreation programme with assistance from specialist recreation staff. The Senior Housemaster/mistress liaises with the Housemasters/mistresses to ensure boarding houses run efficiently. The Director of Studies is responsible for the effective management of the academic programme with assistance from the Senior Teacher.

EFL teachers are appointed on the basis of one teacher per 14 students (one per nine at Rugby). The average combined staff to student ratio is 1 : 5, which includes Recreation Assistants and Specialist Recreation Teachers who are involved in the recreation programme.

We are accredited by the British Council and a member of English UK.
