Job overview

We are looking for strong Teachers of  Engineering (or D&T with the ability to adapt)  to join our special team commencing in September 2018. Ideally, the candidate will be a competent practitioner from education or industry with a keen interest in applying skills and experiences into a broader and encompassing engineering curriculum. If you are currently in industry and are seriously considering moving into educating young adults, UTC Portsmouth offers the best kind of environment: excellent facilities, very supportive colleagues, outstanding students and generous leave entitlement compared to industry.

Thank you for taking an interest in teaching at UTC Portsmouth. We are a college specialising in STEM education for 14-19 year olds (with electrical & mechanical engineering and advanced manufacturing as our specialisms) and we formally opened for learning in September 2017. This is an exciting opportunity for young people in the area and UTC Portsmouth is specifically designed to function as a place of learning where college leavers will be well-equipped to provide employers and universities with the very specific skills they seek. We are heavily oversubscribed for 2018 with both Year 10 and Year 12 applications.

Please look at our website and prospectus as they should give you a good idea of the sort of college we are. Our ethos is a simple one; young people will acquire the very specific technical skills needed for the world of work and higher education. But, just as importantly, they will gain the necessary life and social skills in order to be happy, ambitious, independent and successful when they leave college. Our brand new purpose-built college is a stimulating, calm, ordered and adult learning environment that invites all students to push themselves. We are already a close and supportive community based on the importance we place in the quality of relationships. We are fortunate in that the parents of our new students are supportive and understand our purpose and values.

UTC Portsmouth operates a ‘business day’. This is slightly longer than most school days in order for students to experience as close to a full working day as possible. The advantage for students and teachers alike is a much healthier work-life balance. During the day, students have additional independent study time and teachers have more than the usual PPA time.

In our first year, we admitted 150 Year 10 and Year 12 students. From Sept 2018 we expect to have around 200 more students. We aim to be full by 2020 with 600 students. This means we are assembling a growing team of staff in stages. It is this team that will define the UTC Portsmouth ‘way’ for other staff to follow in the subsequent years. Therefore, we are only seeking adaptable individuals and highly organised team players. As well as experienced teachers, applications from NQTs, strong teachers/instructors without QTS and engineers (minimum L4 qualified) are most welcome too. You must have a good sense of humour and be able to take the initiative. You will need to be resilient, versatile and autonomous.

We offer a competitive salary and may, in certain circumstances and to the right candidate, offer an appropriate recruitment allowance.

Once again, thank you for expressing an interest in this exciting opportunity and we look forward to receiving and reading your application.
