About the Role
Barnet and Southgate College is seeking a highly skilled Engineering Workshop Technician to provide specialist technical support across our Engineering department. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with students, academic staff, and external clients, ensuring the smooth operation of workshop facilities and enhancing practical learning experiences.
As part of our dedicated technician team, you will contribute to a broad range of practical engineering services, including manufacturing, fabrication, and equipment maintenance. You will be an experienced machinist with expertise in workshop equipment, CNC and conventional machining, welding, and assembly techniques.
This role also involves delivering technician-led practical teaching sessions, supporting student projects, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations within the workshop and laboratory environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Workshop Management: Support the operation of mechanical workshops, including CNC and conventional machining, fabrication, and assembly.
- Technical Support: Assist in manufacturing and fabrication for projects and practical classes.
- Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all equipment is well-maintained, serviced, and tested.
- Procurement & Inventory: Source materials, consumables, and equipment while maintaining an efficient teaching equipment store.
- Health & Safety Compliance: Conduct risk assessments, maintain safety standards, and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Student & Staff Support: Assist academic staff in developing new demonstrations and projects, while also providing hands-on support to students.
- Administrative Duties: Maintain records, liaise with suppliers, and assist in raising purchase orders.
- Open days & Development: Support college outreach activities and take part in professional development opportunities.
About You
- We are looking for a motivated and skilled Engineering Workshop Technician who possesses:
- Experience in conventional and CNC machining, welding, and fabrication.
- Strong technical knowledge of workshop equipment, mechanical assemblies, and prototype development.
- The ability to interpret technical drawings and produce high-quality components.
- A proactive approach to health and safety compliance in workshop environments.
- Experience in technician-led teaching and supporting engineering students.
- Excellent organisational, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
