Riverston School is a small independent school with a strong inclusive ethos, with the majority of our students granted EHCPs from the various surrounding London Local Authorities. We have children of Nursery and Pre-School age and then from Year 7 up to Sixth Form.

We are looking for a dedicated and dynamic full-time (5 days a week) Drama/Performing Arts and English teacher, with the ability to teach Key Stage 3, Functional Skills and BTEC.


The Role


Main Duties 

Teaching & Learning

• To manage pupil learning through effective teaching in accordance with the Department’s schemes of work and policies.

• To ensure continuity, progression and cohesiveness in all teaching

• To use a variety of methods and approaches (including differentiation) to match curricular objectives and the range of pupil needs, and ensure equal opportunity for all pupils.

• To set homework regularly (in accordance with the School homework policy) to consolidate and extend learning and to encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning

• To work with SEN staff and support staff (including prior discussion and joint planning) in order to benefit from their specialist knowledge and to maximise their effectiveness within lessons.

• To work effectively as a member of the Department, learn to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

• To set high expectations for all pupils, to deepen their knowledge and understanding and to maximise their achievement.

• To use positive management of behaviour in an environment of mutual respect which allows pupils to feel safe and secure and promotes their self esteem

Monitoring, Assessment Recording, Reporting and Accountability

• To be immediately responsible for the processes of identification, assessment, recording and reporting for the pupils in their charge

• To contribute towards the implementation of EHCPs as detailed in the current Code of Practice particularly the planning and recording of appropriate actions and outcomes related to set targets

• To assess pupils’ work systematically and use the results to inform future planning, teaching and curricular development

• To be familiar with statutory assessment and reporting procedures and to prepare and present informative, helpful and accurate reports to parents.

• Keep an accurate register of pupils for each lesson. Unexplained absences or patterns of absence should be reported immediately in accordance with the School Policy.  

Subject Knowledge & Understanding

• To have a thorough and up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the National Curriculum programmes of study, level descriptors and specifications for examinations courses.

• To keep up-to-date with research and developments in pedagogy and the subject area.

Professional Standards 

• To be a role model to pupils through personal presentation and professional conduct

• To arrive in class, on or before the start of the lesson, and to begin and end lessons on time.

• To cover for absent colleagues as is reasonable, fair and equitable 

• To co-operate with the employer in all matters concerning Health & Safety and specifically to take reasonable care of their own Health & Safety and that of any other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.

• To be familiar with the School and Departmental handbooks and support all the school’s policies e.g. Health & Safety, Citizenship, Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.

• To establish effective working relations with professional colleagues and associate staff


Welfare, Behaviour and Safeguarding

• Meet with parents and carers as part of maintaining positive relationships and the full implementation of the School’s values and ethos. 

• To promote the School’s values, positive attitudes and good pupils behaviour, dealing promptly with conflicts and incidents in line with established policy and procedures, encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour.

• To supervise pupils on visits, trips and out-of-school activities as required. 

• To support playground/break time/lunches and lunchtime play supervision within employed hours.

• Administer first aid as appropriate (training will be given).

• Maintain vigilance regarding Safeguarding and Child Protection.

• Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to Child Protection, safeguarding, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person in a timely and proactive manner.

Professional Development 

• To attend and participate in regular meetings as appropriate 

• To participate in training and other learning activities offered by the school to further knowledge. 

• To carry out the above duties in accordance with the school’s Equalities Policy.

Riverston School is a mixed, specialist SEND independent school with Nursery, Senior School and Sixth Form departments situated in Lee, south-east London.

Riverston School was founded in 1926 and has been family-owned since 1956. The school is housed in four adjacent Victorian houses. Recent refurbishments and upgrades have delivered a coffee shop, a sixth-form area and a centre for textiles, food technology and skills for life.

Vision and values

Riverston School’s main aims are: to provide a safe, supportive and caring environment for everyone; to offer a modern and varied curriculum that works for each individual student; and to equip pupils with a range of skills for their future life, encompassing the academic, social, physical, creative and moral skills everyone needs.

While the curriculum concentrates on traditional academic subjects, children’s physical and creative development is prioritised too. Students learn English, maths, history, geography, RE, languages, ICT, science and business studies, alongside drama, food technology, music, design and technology, art and choir. They also have the opportunity to take part in junior sports leadership awards and athletic challenges such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
