Job overview

As part of the Learning and Teaching department at Portland College you will deliver English, Tutorial and pastoral elements of our high quality individualised learning programmes. In conjunction with Learner Services, you will lead on target setting and development of personal and life skills of all learners within your tutorial group, in line with their Educational Health Care Plan outcomes. You will play a key role in the success of their Study Programme. You will track and evidence their progress, their learner journey and communicate this through reports and Person Centred Reviews.

Our staff plan and deliver meaningful activities to promote learners understanding of EDI, Safeguarding, SMSC, Maths, English, employability and independence. You will lead on the integration of these into your specific curriculum areas (English and Tutorial), whilst enabling learners to achieve their individual targets and specified qualifications.

Learners at Portland experience a range of physical and learning challenges and they are studying from Pre entry up to level 3. We promote Positive Behaviour Support and Total Communication across the college.

Additional hours are available to the candidates with Assistive and Communication Technology expertise, to continue the positive work the ACT and SLT team are doing within Total Communication.

We are looking for experience within a specialist educational environment and ideally experience of delivering highly differentiated programmes to learners who have complex needs. Knowledge of RARPA would be advantageous as would a qualification in Special Educational Needs.

You will need the relevant teaching qualification and subject relevant qualifications.

Fixed term contract for 9 months
3 days per week 22.5 hours per week

 Portland College is a specialist college dedicated to educating those with autistic spectrum conditions, and those with profound and multiple learning disabilities. As of the most recent inspection there were 134 full-time learners on the school roll. The school is based on a single 20 acre site three miles south of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Since 2011 Portland College has incorporated many students and staff from nearby specialist school Whitegates College into its programme. Vocational programmes on offer include Communication & Life Skills, Horticulture & Animal Care, Sport, Leisure & Fitness, Admin & Events Organisation, Creative Arts & Media, and Retail & Marketing. The foundation stone for the site was laid in 1949 by the then Princess Elizabeth.

The ethos embodied in the college’s original mission statement continues to define its goal; to maximise the ability and minimise the effects of disability of students through the provision of opportunities for learning in an inclusive specialist residential environment.

Portland College offers a range of both vocational opportunities and academic education for students. Functional skills in subjects such as Maths, English and ICT are embedded across programmes, giving students fundamental learning that will be applicable for a wide variety on circumstances.
