Ark Helenswood Academy is a large all-girls 11-16 academy with a mixed sixth form provision in Hastings.  Hastings is a vibrant seaside town situated in East Sussex, a county steeped in English history and areas of natural beauty. The academy benefits from being located within stunning grounds surrounded by fields and woodland, and being just three miles from Hastings town with its artistic Old Town, quirky shops, and revolutionary double deck promenade and pier of the year. There are easily accessible links to Eastbourne and Brighton with a direct rail link to London.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a successful and aspirational academy which is consistently achieving some of the highest results in Hastings and St Leonards.  We recently gained a “Good” judgement from Ofsted.  The strength of our ambitious Improvement Plan provides a strong and supportive environment for you to develop and provide you with support to gain advancement to senior positions within Helenswood or other network schools.

The position will involve teaching students across Key Stages 3 and 4 and potentially Key Stage 5.  We are keen to appoint someone who would like to assist in the encouragement of extra-curricular activities, such as the debate club or our creative writing club. There is also scope to assist in the organisation of educational trips which will enhance students’ learning and their love of English, as well as continue to work closely with the Library and their team. The successful applicant will be a motivated individual with a keen interest in encouraging and inspiring students to love learning and excel in the subject area of English.

We take the wellbeing of our staff seriously and offer health benefits including subsidised gym membership, flu vaccinations in the autumn term and Employee Assistance Programme which provides a free and confidential service to staff.  Weekly recognition from the Principal is awarded to staff for effort and enthusiasm and is shared with all staff during briefings.

Helenswood Academy is part of Ark, an international charity and one of the UK’s most successful multi-academy trusts, with a network of 36 schools in 4 locations across the country. Benefits of being part of the Ark network include:

• A salary higher than the main scale teacher salaries

• Twice as many training days as standard and network-wide events with Ark   colleagues, held by the best minds in education

As the ideal candidate you will:

• be committed to raising attainment in a challenging classroom environment

• have a resilient character and a strong personal drive

• have proven experience working successfully with students of all abilities

• be able to show evidence of continually improving the teaching and learning of their subject though schemes of work and extra-curricular activities

• have the opportunity to teach a range of key stages.

We are committed to ensuring all staff have access to a comprehensive programme of professional development and dedicate one afternoon to training sessions on a regular basis.  Teachers new to the profession have weekly bespoke training and receive termly training from the staff at Ark Central.  NQTs are also assigned a subject mentor and coach.

Ofsted report

“Many middle leaders have welcomed the culture shift generated by Ark and the Principal since the start of this academic year. They know that they must be the driving force for change. Practically all middle leaders have risen to the challenge enthusiastically. Staff responses to the questionnaire reflected increasing confidence combined with realism about issues such as behaviour. The academy has wisely and successfully adopted many of the Ark programmes to develop staff’s skills."
