Job overview

Required for September 2025

We are looking to appoint a specialist, supernumerary English teacher. The successful candidate will be, or if an ECT, have the ability to become an inspirational classroom practitioner.

The English department is a successful and large team housed together in one block of the school. All full-time teachers have their own classroom, appropriately equipped with laptop, projector and visualiser and there is a comprehensive induction programme in place to support new staff.

In addition to quality first teaching and learning, this position aims to provide the capacity for specialist staff to help personalise even further each student’s experience of English through targeted and focussed intervention. Students study AQA English Language and Literature at GCSE and the department builds up the knowledge required for this throughout Key Stage three. A well-used and valued library is led by our librarian, a fully trained primary school teacher.

Frederick Gough School has been the most oversubscribed school in North Lincolnshire for the last nine years. Ofsted (Nov 2023) described our school as truly comprehensive where pupils are happy, kind and respectful and where teachers and leaders are proud to work. We genuinely believe in education being the key to ensuring a successful society for the future and would ask that you read our curriculum intent on our website as well as other key documents to get a feel of what we are about. We are proud of our values and positive culture and have attached some of the additional benefits of being part of the Fred Gough Family. This includes a staff wellbeing package through the School’s Advisory Service.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and we expect applicants to have the same commitment. For all applicants there will be an enhanced DBS check including children’s barred list information. It is an offence for anyone barred from working with children to apply for this position.

Further details are available from the school and interested candidates are welcome to visit the school by appointment in advance, to meet with the Deputy Head, Mick Dalton, mdalton@fgs.org.uk

The closing date for applications is noon on Thursday 27 March, with interviews to be held on Thursday 3 April.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a safer recruitment, self-disclosure form and submit it prior to interview. References will be obtained prior to interview and an online search carried out following ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024’.

As an employer, we promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect the same commitment from existing and prospective employees or volunteers. Recruitment to this post will follow our safer recruitment procedure which includes us requesting references prior to interview and a DBS check.
