English Teacher - Maternity Cover (Senior School)

We are looking for a dynamic teacher of English Language and Literature to join our senior school team, with responsibility for teaching KS3, KS4, and KS5 (A Level). This is a part-time maternity cover appointment, working three days per week (0.6 FTE), and commencing at the start of the new school year in September 2023. The teacher will work as a Form Tutor in our pastoral team and will be responsible for delivering high quality lessons while supporting students to achieve their best. Our teachers are also required to lead extra-curricular activities during the school term.

Our school has a proven success rate at GCSE and A Level in Language and Literature, and our teachers work closely in collaboration with each other to create a successful learning environment that caters for all abilities.

The successful candidate will have a recognised teaching qualification (ideally B.Ed. and/or PGCE), and have had a minimum three years' teaching GCSE and A Level studies in a UK school or an international school environment.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Deliver high quality teaching, learning & curriculum development
  • Create a stimulating class environment which promotes effective teaching & learning
  • Develop appropriate, differentiated schemes of work which ensure that the aims and objectives for the teaching of English Language and Literature are delivered. 
  • Plan and prepare courses for assigned timetabled classes and groups
  • Prepare courses which make provision for students of differing ability in all subjects
  • Monitor & track pupils’ achievements at regular intervals, subject to instructions from Head of Faculty or senior colleagues  
  • Sustain effective teaching of subjects, including evaluation of quality of teaching and standards of pupils’ achievements, and the setting targets for improvement  
  • Ensure the discipline and safety of all pupils in assigned groups and classes
  • Participate in faculty meetings, and with the review, development, and management of activities relating to the curriculum and organisation of the school, including development and improvement planning
  • Participate in preparing pupils for internal and external examinations
  • Provide opportunities for the use of digital technology within the curriculum
  • Perform the roles and responsibilities of a form tutor, working closely with the pastoral team to provide appropriate care and support for the well-being of pupils
  • Liaise with parents and attend meetings arranged for that purpose    
  • Be involved in the development and delivery of extra-curricular activities and opportunities across the Key Stages
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the school
  • Identify appropriate resources for the subject and ensure they are used efficiently, effectively and safely, including off-site facilities and school residential trips
  • Develop and implement subject policies, plans, target, and practices within the context of the school's aims and policies
  • Participate in the break duty rota and undertake cover duties for colleagues, as assigned
  • Carry out such other duties as are necessary to meet the needs of the school and pupils, as directed by the Head of Senior School and the Principal
  • Remain up to date with subject development, including participating in in-service training
  • Participate in professional development and training as required    
  • Be a champion for innovation and continuous improvement
  • Create a culture of achievement where students aspire to do their best
  • Demonstrate a flexible approach in the role

Person specification

Essential experience, skills and abilities

  • A recognised UK teaching qualification; ideally B.Ed. with PGCE/PGDE    
  • At least three years’ experience in the UK or experience teaching the British curriculum in an international school, including GCSEs and A levels
  • Teaching experience in English at KS3 & KS4 levels, and up to A-Level
  • Professional interest in working in an international school environment
  • Experience of teaching pupils with English as an additional language
  • The ability to work with a range of pupils at all levels
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiasm that inspires others
  • Positivity, perseverance, and a good sense of humour
  • Strong IT / Edutech
