Job overview

At Carew Academy we take staff wellbeing seriously – healthy and happy staff make great teachers! If you are considering a new challenge in your career then get in touch to find out what makes Carew different. We welcome applicants from all teaching backgrounds to join our team on the journey to Outstanding; NQTs are equally welcome and will benefit for the close support of a small school environment.

Carew Academy is a Good school, with an Outstanding judgement for Behaviour and Safety, for pupils between the ages of 7 and 18 who have moderate learning difficulties or a diagnosis of ASD. In the short time I have been at Carew I can tell you it is a truly special place. With only 185 students we have a unique family ethos and staff are able to get to know every child as an individual, our parents are also incredibly supportive of the school.

To support staff wellbeing we have ‘Marking Mondays’ and ‘Wellbeing Wednesdays’. This means we focus on getting all our marking done during school time, an achievable task with a maximum of 10 students in any class – mark as you go. Each half term we have a Wellbeing Wednesday - last term staff enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt and Afternoon Tea instead of two of the regular after school meetings.  In particular, as Teacher of English, you will only be marking GCSE work for a maximum of 10 students in a class – if you love your subject and have a passion for supporting students with SEN to make rapid progress with their literacy, but you are fed up with the huge amounts of marking that some teachers face then Carew is the place for you!

Carew has recently had its application to build a brand new school building approved, so this is an exciting time to be joining us with an increasing pupil roll and lots of opportunities for career development within our wider family of Orchard Hill College and Academy Trust.

We are looking for someone with drive, creativity and a passion for teaching and supporting young people to achieve their best. Your teaching background is not important; what is important is that you have high expectations, love a challenge and have a determination to make a difference to the lives of our superb students.

Our curriculum is really different too – our Lower School students have enrichment activities every afternoon which include Rock Climbing, Swimming, Horse Riding and a huge range of other activities. All our Upper School students all take part in subject specific overnight trips to support their learning and we would welcome candidates keen to get involved in residential trips and visits.

We strongly encourage visits to the school to get a feel of whether it is the right place for you - get in touch for a confidential discussion and to arrange a visit. Please contact me directly, Rob Watkins (Principal) on 07799547594 or rwatkins@carewacademy.org.

An application pack can be downloaded from the Orchard Hill College website https://www.orchardhill.ac.uk/.  Please send your completed application forms to cprice@carewacademy.org.

Carew Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.  Carew Academy – Let’s show what we can do.
