About Department for Education, Children and Young People

The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) provides educational services to learners from birth.  There is no defined age limit because we believe in and are responsible for educational services that enable all Tasmanians to learn, regardless of their age, their background or where they live.

We provide educational services through our 12 Child and Family Centres, Launching into Learning programs (babies to 4 year olds and their families), primary, combined, secondary and senior secondary schools around the state, including education delivered flexibly or via blended learning. Our Libraries give Tasmanians access to a wide range of services including community learning.

Teachers are central to school improvement efforts. Improving the efficiency and equity of schooling depends, in large measure, on ensuring that competent people want to work as teachers, that their teaching is of high quality, and that all students have access to high quality teaching.

The Department’s overarching objective is that all learners succeed as connected, resilient, creative and curious thinkers. It is these attributes that research shows will prepare learners for further education and the world of work in the 21st Century.

The Strategic Plan articulates the Department’s shared values of aspiration, courage, growth and respect, which guide behaviours, and inform decisions, across the whole Department. It also focuses the Department on the delivery of four evidence-based goals to improve outcomes for all learners: access, participation and engagement; early learning; wellbeing; and literacy and numeracy. The Department’s efforts toward achievement of these goals is tailored to a learner’s age, ability and aspirations in the areas of: early learning; primary and secondary education; senior secondary education; and adult learning.
