The Governors and Headteacher are seeking to appoint an Estate Operative and site caretaker who will undertake a range of care-taking and site management duties throughout the year, including security and supervision of the site and related equipment, and other duties including porterage, cleaning and maintenance.

Core responsibilities and tasks

Site:

· Take responsibility for the security of the premises and its contents in the absence of the Head teacher and Operations Manager or any other designated responsible person.

· Act as a Key Holder, take responsibility for access to the school, (including emergency calls outside of normal working hours) constantly looking for strategies to improve the schools premises.

· Manage the use, maintenance and security of plant, machinery and equipment based at the school, including heating and lighting to the school, including the replacement of bulbs.

· Take delivery of stocks and materials for the school, carry out porterage within school, move furniture and equipment, as required, assist in setting up for assemblies, events etc.

· Operate and monitor heating, plumbing and electrical systems in accordance with instructions and current safety legislation and recommend better use of such systems. Be aware of how to isolate systems if required.

· Oversee schedules and routine maintenance liaising with contractors and suppliers as necessary. Prioritising minor works at the school, taking into account urgent needs and health and safety issues.

Health and safety:

· Conduct daily checks of external areas including checks on field, litter picking, steps, pathways, carpark, playgrounds, graffiti, clearing grids, bin area. Grit pathways in the event of sleet/snow/ice etc.

· Keep COSHH register up to date and comply with all statutory H&S regulations.

· Carry out school based emergency procedures, eg in the event of a fire. Act as a Fire Warden and complete an accurate programme of maintenance of fire equipment including a log of weekly and termly tests.

· To carry out general repairs, decoration and maintenance.

· Ensure drains and gutters are tidy and litter free.

· Drive the minibus when required if able.

· Take the minibus for services, MOT and other maintenance.

Cleaning:

· Monitor standards of work undertaken by outside agencies and make routine reports.

· Supervise cleaning staff and ensure the cleaning policy is adhered to. Undertake additional cleaning as required to support the cleaning staff (eg if a cleaner is absent)

· Further cleaning duties including matters regarding removal of graffiti, break ins, sick children, animals, bursts, floods, fire damage, including the boiler room, caretakers room and all store cupboards.

· Monitor and order supplies of consumables and to ensure that deliveries are made in accordance with invoices. Daily replenishment of consumables in all required areas of the school.

Knowledge, skills and experience

· Completed a common core programme of induction for working with children

· Health and safety knowledge and understanding

· Full driving licence (MIDAS desirable)

· Knowledge of COSHH regulations

· Experience working as a caretaker / site manager

· Trade experience or skill (plumbing/ joinery/ painting etc)

This role undertakes a range of caretaking duties reporting to the Headteacher. This role requires a professional regard for the ethos of Cransley School and to demonstrate high standards in your own performance.

This job description is not your contract of employment or any part of it, it is prepared for the purpose of school organisation and may be subject to change depending upon the needs of the school.

The job description is intended as a guide to the general duties required of the post, the post holder may be required to undertake training and perform other reasonable duties other than those given in the job description as requested by the Headteacher.


Our offer

Contract: Permanent, 35 hours per week; 52 weeks (with statutory holiday period).

Term-time weekday hours 7am -11am, 3pm-6pm, with Estate responsibilities and duties during non-term time.  Additional hours may be needed and a flexible approach is required around statutory holiday periods.  

Salary: Up to £25,000 per annum.  Free lunchtime meals will be available.
