Job overview

Examiner vacancies for GCSE and A-level Sociology – summer 2017

As the largest provider of academic qualifications in the UK, we mark over 7 million GCSEs and A-levels every year. It is the teaching community who help to make this happen.

As a practising teacher you are eligible for the role of an examiner, one we think you will find really rewarding and great for your personal development.

Here are a few of the benefits our examiners tell us about

  • financial – you can earn between £500 to £1,000, rising in subsequent years
  • gain a fresh perspective and inspire your students with new ideas
  • build upon your continuous professional development
  • enhance your CV – great for career progression
  • improve your knowledge of the mark scheme, helping with mock exam marking
  • prepare your students for success.

The role

All new examiners are assigned with a team leader who will provide support and guidance. You will also receive training, this is online and will really help to build your confidence. Shortly after the exam has been sat you will undertake standardisation; this is your chance to practise and really get to grips with the mark scheme.

Once you have completed standardisation you are ready to move to live marking. The marking period is between 3 to 4 weeks and it is a good idea to check your availability for the period shortly after the exam you are applying to mark.

New examiners have a reduced number of papers to mark to help with your busy schedule - this can increase in subsequent years should you choose to take on more. Nearly all of our qualifications are now marked online which gives you great flexibility to work your marking alongside your classroom teaching job – there are no longer requirements for days out of the classroom.
