Job overview

The role

The Executive Business Manager role is an exciting opportunity to establish, lead and deliver a high quality and efficient business support service across two United Learning schools in east London.

United Learning is a large and growing group of schools which aims to provide a life changing education to children and young people.  The group has schools across England and a focus on building geographical clusters of schools that can work with and support each other. The East London Secondary Cluster is currently made up of two schools: Walthamstow Academy (secondary) and Goresbrook School (all-through).

United Learning schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could on their own. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

We are looking for a highly experienced, strategic and customer focused individual who will be able to set up and lead the formation of the current cluster between the two schools (with the potential that this may expand over time). You will work with autonomy to lead a number of business services across the schools as well as being responsible for managing the relationship with United Learning central teams, to ensure that these functions provide value added support and advice to the schools in the cluster in a timely and professional way.

You will have experience in leading and coordinating the delivery of business support services in one or more schools, or a similarly complex environment. In addition, you will be familiar with strategic planning and decision-making, professional relationship management, negotiating and influencing at Senior Leadership, Governing Body and Board level, and the effective and efficient management of all resources.

This is a challenging and diverse role offering the opportunity to shape the development of business support to our secondary and all-through school in east London, leading and developing teams of skilled and qualified business support staff and making a tangible impact on the lives of young people.  In return, you will receive first-class development, a dynamic working environment and a range of employee benefits including 6 weeks’ holiday, access to private healthcare, Local Government Pension scheme and a competitive salary.

This is a school-based role with an expectation that you will divide your time between the two schools in the Cluster with travel to other schools or offices within the group expected on an occasional basis. Your application should explain your suitability for the role described above and in the job description and should be tailored to meet the Person Specification in terms of your knowledge, skills, and qualifications.

WALTHAMSTOW ACADEMY

Since opening in 2006 and moving into a state-of-the-art brand new building in 2008, Walthamstow Academy has received a national school achievement award, has experienced a huge increase in popularity, and was noted by Ofsted for its outstanding Leadership and Management.  We are oversubscribed with waiting lists in all years. Results have increased significantly over our first seven years, with the percentage of students gaining 5+ A*-C Grades including English and Maths increasing to 68%.

We have continued to establish our Sixth Form, which includes a wide range of subjects including Maths, Further Maths and all three sciences. Sixth Form results are strong, with year 13 students attaining 61% at A*-B and 81% at A*-C.

The Academy is proud of its multi-cultural character and we celebrate the diversity of heritage in our community. 84% of our students are from minority ethnic groups, many coming from African, Caribbean, Eastern European, Turkish and Pakistani communities.

Within the community served by the academy there is social and economic disadvantage with 51% of the students being eligible for Pupil Premium.  29% of the students have a first language other than English and a significant number have low levels of literacy on entry. Many students enter the Academy with low levels of attainment and the staff work hard to add value to their performance. Standards across the Academy are above national averages in most subjects.

Positive relationships are at the heart of the improvements the Academy has made over the past year and students have positive attitudes to learning and enjoy school. There is a strong team spirit among the staff which in turn creates a supportive ethos for the students.

Walthamstow Academy is sponsored by United Learning and therefore benefits from being part of one of the largest group of academies in the country, offering excellent professional development opportunities and career progression to all staff.

The Academy is located close to the North Circular Road, M11 and both Blackhorse Road and Walthamstow Central underground stations from where it takes about half an hour to get into central London. The Academy is situated in a part of London where property prices are still relatively inexpensive and within easy access of Epping Forest, the Lee Valley and rural Hertfordshire and Essex.

Our students are amazing, so are our staff. Can you be part of the team to take outcomes for the Academy to the next level? If you are committed to raising standards of achievement and making a real difference to the future lives of the students of the Academy, please return your completed application form, confidential declaration and applicant monitoring form to the address indicated in the advertisement.
