Job overview

About us

United Learning is a successful national group of academies and independent schools which share a mission to bring out ‘the best in everyone’ and improve the life chances of the children and young people in their care.

As a long-established and growing Multi Academy Trust, we are forming a new secondary Cluster in Salford and are looking to appoint an Executive Principal to oversee the schools within it.

Our Clusters are a group of 3-5 schools, led by an Executive Principal and an Executive Business Manager. The cluster will initially comprise 3 secondary academies; Irlam and Cadishead and The Albion (previously part of Salford Academy Trust) and Salford City Academy which joined United Learning in 2005.

Together, the three secondary schools will form a Cluster that enables high quality, bespoke school improvement and wider opportunities for both staff and students to work collaboratively. The schools will likewise work closely with our schools in the North West including William Hulme’s Grammar School, Stockport Academy and Manchester Academy.

Leaders at Salford City Academy have worked relentlessly over the past two years to ensure a culture of high expectations is embedded at all levels. Whilst transfer of the other two schools will take place in the Spring Term of 2019, we have been working closely with leaders since September to ensure that standards, which are currently inadequate, rapidly improve.

United Learning is ambitious for the Cluster to build on the schools’ existing strengths in line with our Framework for Excellence: promoting the best in everyone, powerful knowledge, education with character, leadership in every role and continuous improvement.

The role

This is an excellent opportunity for a leader looking to build on their previous success to work with leaders in each of the schools and drive collaborative school improvement and wider efficiencies. As a system leader, you will combine the autonomy of running your own Cluster with the benefit of being part of a national group, emphasising shared practice and CPD.

Each of the three academies is housed in modern, state of the art buildings and play a vital part in their community, promoting the key values of respect, tolerance and diversity essential to ensuring social cohesion and high aspirations.

As Executive Principal, you will need to model on a daily basis what Good and Outstanding practice looks like and demonstrate a clear commitment to each of the schools and their communities. Your expertise and enthusiasm for education and the difference it makes to the lives of young people will be evident each and every day, in all that you do.

Salford, which borders Manchester, combines the many opportunities available in a large cosmopolitan city with delightful countryside within easy travel distance.  As a result of strong travel networks, the location of the academies offers colleagues the ability to live in a vibrant city or the calm of local villages and small towns.

If you are looking for an exciting, challenging and highly rewarding role within a Group that offers a strong commitment to professional development, and have an unshakeable commitment to improving the lives of young people, we encourage you to visit us.

United Learning is a large, and growing, group of schools, across both primary and secondary phases, and the state and independent sectors. We aim to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our teachers are passionate about their work. We know that teaching can be a tough profession, but with the right support and a commitment to seeing the best in each other, we work tirelessly to find creative ways to educate. By working as a team, we can achieve more together by sharing than any single teacher, department or school could alone. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed.

To produce the best learning experiences for our pupils, we believe it’s essential to enhance the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) capabilities of both teachers and support staff, and our range of programmes, facilitated by the United Learning Institute support your to develop and progress within your career.

Our rewards and wellbeing programmes help us show we care about you. We're working with experts in the field to introduce a Group-wide wellbeing programme to support you every day, and every academy offers at least eight INSET days per academic year, with three solely dedicated to planning. Additionally, you can access a range of flexible benefits that suit your lifestyle, from reduced childcare costs and gym memberships, to cycle to work and health programmes, hundreds of retail discounts, and many more.

Teaching is a challenging – yet fantastic – profession. It takes a dedicated practitioner with a solid team of support staff behind them to make a real difference to a child’s life.

That’s why we believe so passionately in the power of sharing. When everyone is working together towards the same goal, we enrich life for every member of staff. Our pupils can expect an outstanding education from a committed team of practitioners that share one core value – to see children and young people achieve their full potential. It's an ethos we call the best in everyone’.

It’s a challenging brief, but one that we’re meeting with a skilled workforce who are supported every step of the way.
