Merrywood Education is a trauma-informed special school with an Outstanding Ofsted rating. We are looking for an experienced and forward thinking Head Teacher to shape the opening of our new school. This is a real opportunity for a dedicated head to create an outstanding provision from the earliest stage. You will be responsible for the strategic direction, operational management, and continued development as part of our schools that transforms lives.

The school will cater for pupils aged 5-16 and up to 60 pupils. You will have the opportunity to select, recruit and train a new team, alongside some key members of the team who will be able to social model the Merrywood way.

Our model has been developed using evidence based theories that supports pupils to learn to the highest standard within a psychologically safe environment. Pupils learning and SEMH needs are prioritised, leading to pupils feeling success within their learning and gain opportunities they have rarely experienced within a school setting before. We have developed curriculums based on the pupils learning and social journey that go onto pupils achieving high levels of qualifications, GCSE's, Functional skills and a range of vocational subjects such as photography, business, health and social care and more.

Our model heavily relies on supporting the wellbeing of staff members through a coaching based model. We encourage reflective practice, ongoing high levels of professional development and a nurturing environment. Staff retention across Merrywood remains high and staff members value the progression offered within the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

·      Provide strategic leadership and clear vision aligned with the school’s values and trauma-informed approach.

·      Ensure the highest standards of teaching, learning, and care for pupils with SEMH needs.

·      Lead and inspire a dedicated team of staff, promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, and professional growth.

·      Maintain and build upon the school’s Outstanding Ofsted rating through rigorous self-evaluation and continuous improvement.

·      Champion a trauma-informed, inclusive culture that supports the emotional wellbeing and academic progress of all pupils.

·      Oversee the delivery of Merrywood's bespoke but broad, balanced, and engaging curriculum tailored to the needs of SEMH learners.

·      Ensure robust safeguarding and child protection procedures are in place and adhered to at all times.

·      Lead on Safer Recruitment practices, ensuring all staff and volunteers are appropriately vetted and trained.

·      Develop and implement effective school effectiveness plans, using data and evidence-based strategies.

·      Build strong partnerships with parents, carers, advisors, local authorities, and external agencies.

·      Manage the school’s budget and resources effectively to ensure sustainability and value for money.

·      Promote staff wellbeing and retention through supportive leadership and professional development opportunities.

·      Represent the school at local and national forums, advocating for the needs of SEMH pupils.

Essential Criteria:

·      Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

·      Substantial leadership experience in a special school or SEMH setting.

·      A relevant National Professional Qualification (NPQ) such as NPQH or NPQEL

·      Proven track record of raising standards and improving outcomes for pupils with complex needs.

·      A sound understanding of trauma-informed practice and its application in an educational setting.

·      Strong knowledge of SEND legislation, safeguarding, and inclusive education.

·      Experience in Safer Recruitment and maintaining a safe, compliant school environment.

·      Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.

·      A progressive, child-centred ethos with a commitment to equity and inclusion.

Desirable

·      Experience working in a school with an Outstanding Ofsted rating.

·      Experience in whole-school development, curriculum innovation, and staff development.

·      Familiarity with therapeutic approaches and multi-agency working.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding sits at the core of every operation within Merrywood; We are dedicated to ensuring that all children receive the safest school environment. Safeguarding is supported externally through annual safeguarding quality assurance inspections aimed to increase our vigilance and accountability. Our advisory board support safeguarding termly and our executive team offer support daily. We follow the safer recruitment legislation and all candidates will be subject to high levels of vetting.
