Hours will generally be normal school hours with one late day per week.  

Smallwood Primary School is an expanding school, with a Language Resource Base and Children’s Centre, conveniently situated close to Earlsfield mainline station and Tooting Broadway underground. We are a rapidly improving school and need enthusiastic and committed teaching assistants to continue our forward momentum.  

We are passionate about the education of our children, continuous professional development of all staff and a strong partnership with parents and the wider community.  

This role will be based in the Language Unit, which is for children with Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties and requires initiative and flexibility as well as a commitment to supporting complex children to reach their full potential. Experience of working with children with Special Educational Needs is essential. You will work under the direction of the class teacher and will be expected to support individuals and small groups of children. A minimum of G.C.S.E. grade C or above in English and Maths are required.

Ideal candidates will be positive and enthusiastic in their approach and will seek to provide the opportunity for the children they are working with to achieve their full potential, both academically and socially.  You will work not only with the class teacher, but with other Language Unit staff as well as Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists on a daily basis.    

The children in the Unit have communication difficulties such as Autism and Expressive and Receptive Language delay, experience of working with children with these types of special needs would be favourable.  The children in these classes may use alternative communication systems such as Makaton signing. Experience of using these systems is desirable.   

You will be a calm, patient and resourceful individual who will be able to respond positively to the challenges of working with pupils of all abilities within a specialist class. You will also join our team of lunchtime supervisors to ensure the safety, well-being and good behaviour of pupils during the lunchtime break.  

You will be positive and enthusiastic in your approach and will seek to provide the opportunity for the children they are working with to achieve their full potential, both academically and socially. A minimum of G.C.S.E. grade C or above in English and Maths and NVQ Level 3 in Childcare or relevant experience is required.
