About St Lawrence College Junior School

St Lawrence College is a boarding and day school in Ramsgate, East Kent for pupils aged 3-18. It is a member of the prestigious HMC group of schools and was founded in 1879, with the Junior School being a member of IAPS. There are currently over 650 pupils across the College, with around 210 in the Junior School (which includes the Nursery) and 450 in the Senior School (from Year 7).

The school is very well resourced, with significant continued investment over recent years including a new senior girls’ boarding house, a new theatre, a new sports hall and recent renovations to boys’ boarding. Junior boarders are housed in Kirby House along with Years 7 and 8. Additional sports pitches were completed in January 2016 and a new Senior School Science, Arts and Technology block is due for completion in September 2018.

The Junior School enjoys the peace and security of a self-contained, family environment, whilst also benefiting from ready access to all of the school's exceptional facilities above.

Traditional Christian values are complemented by an ambitious, open-minded approach to education, and a strong belief that a secure, supportive and well-structured environment gives children the self-confidence to believe in themselves and to rise to every challenge.  Opportunities are provided for children to excel in all areas of school life: moral, intellectual, physical and cultural.  Every child is valued as an individual, and the first aim of the teaching staff is to find something special in each of them.

Most children are from local homes on the Isle of Thanet, though there are a few boarders from further afield. Entry is non-selective, and so a wide range of ability is accepted.  However, the school is proud of its academic achievements, and of the scope of its enriched curriculum.  Pupils regularly win Senior School scholarships, and there is an impressive record of success in the 11+ Kent Test.

The Junior School has optional Saturday morning activities for Years 3 to 6. The School is truly coeducational, with more girls than boys in a number of year groups. All teaching staff are expected to contribute to the broader life of a busy boarding and day school, through co-curricular activities, trips, etc.

Working at St Lawrence College

The school is situated in a beautiful self-contained campus within easy walking distance of the historic seaside town of Ramsgate in South East England.  Ramsgate is well known for its royal harbour, beautiful sandy beaches, coastal walks and sailing. Ramsgate and its neighbouring towns, Broadstairs and Margate, is part of the Isle of Thanet. The historic city of Canterbury is close-by - just 25 minutes by car.

The school has excellent transport links to the continent, being near both Dover and the Channel Tunnel. London is only 75 minutes away by high-speed rail link to St Pancras International.

Benefits include:

  • A warm and welcoming staff with a supportive senior leadership team
  • Friendly, polite pupils
  • CPD encouraged
  • School meals provided, freshly cooked on-site
