Faculty Head and Teacher of Design & Technology

Ackworth School, a co-educational boarding and day school, was founded in 1779 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). It maintains its ethos and traditions, and is still governed by the Society. The school is academically non-selective and provides an excellent range of facilities and extra-curricular opportunities. The Head is a member of both HMC and the Society of Heads.

We have recently restructured internally and created a faculty structure across our senior school. As a result of a vacancy for a Head of Design & Technology this has created an opportunity to appoint externally for our Faculty Head. The successful post holder will be required to teach Design & Technology and act as the Head of Department. In addition to this will be the role of Faculty Head of the four subject areas. In total, this will involve the line management of four full time members of teaching staff and a technician. 

This role may suit an existing Head of Department who is looking to broaden their leadership skills, encompassing other subject areas, but also have a wider understanding of pupil performance and how, within the faculty, successful outcomes can be influenced.

Faculty Heads report directly to the Senior Deputy Head and this is very much a pivotal middle management role that will also work closely with other areas of the school such as our Pastoral and Academic leads and Head of Sixth Form. As a small school our teaching staff work collaboratively and you will liaise closely with other faculty heads in sharing information and best practice.

As a non-selective school we are able to offer a supportive education to pupils who have special educational needs. To support these pupils, it is essential that the department can offer the most effective differentiation to guarantee their progress. The candidate must be able to demonstrate success in this area. Many of our pupils, particularly our boarders, have English as a second language. Many access EAL lessons to support their progress. Experience of EAL, and working with pupils where English is not their first language, would be an advantage. 

As a boarding school we expect all of our teaching staff to embrace activities in the wider school and contribute to these areas outside of their department. 

The successful candidate will:

• be an outstanding teacher with a proven track record of securing excellent outcomes

• have up-to-date knowledge of subject curricula and assessment requirements for Design & Technology and use this knowledge in the wider faculty role.
