Hillhead High School is a non-denominational, mixed state school in Glasgow. This mainstream secondary school is located in the west end of Glasgow, adjacent to Glasgow University. At full capacity, the school can hold 1,090 pupils aged 11-18.

In 1972, Hillhead High School was turned into a comprehensive school. The main building was designed by EG Wylie in 1921 and is now protected as Grade B listed. It has excellent facilities including two gymnasiums, 10 science labs, a drama studio and three art and design rooms. The school encourages participation in extracurricular activities and provides a system of minority time activities, which sets aside time every Friday afternoon for pupils to take part in sporting and cultural activities.

Values and vision

Hillhead High School aims to empower all children to not only apply themselves to their studies but to also take part in cultural, sporting, social, leisure and personal activities. The school aims to be inclusive of all cultures and nationalities. This is reflected in its diverse student population, with 30 different languages represented, and in the classes on offer, such as Urdu and Chinese. Teachers strive to develop and promote students’ personal and social development alongside academic achievements, to prepare them for later life.

The school specialises in promoting equality and social justice, and its pupils have gained achievements in sports, music and enterprise citizenship. Hillhead High School also strives to partner with businesses that encourage pupils’ enterprise skills.

Education Scotland report

"The overall quality of teaching was good with some examples of very effective practice. Most teachers planned their lessons well and gave clear explanations and instructions. Some shared and reinforced learning outcomes and reviewed them with pupils at the end of the lesson … Teachers used praise appropriately to build the confidence of pupils."
