Job overview

Relocation assistance available

As one of the leading independent schools in the country, a vibrant sport and physical activity (SPA) offer is central to our vision for a relevant, empowering and holistic 21st century education. We wish to appoint a Director of Sport & Physical Activity to lead an exciting phase of our programme and facilities development.

To underpin our ambitious SPA strategy, College has recently made a significant investment in its new Health and Fitness Centre (HFC). Fully operational since January 2018, it is already proving transformational in allowing us to deliver exciting new SPA programmes to the girls, and a second phase of refurbishment has been committed to in the near future.

The SPA strategy is pupil-centred. As we believe that developing physical literacy is a critical element of holistic education for the girls, we have refreshed our PE curriculum with a focus on physical literacy and life skills. Our provision is beyond a traditional competitive school sport offer, and embraces a much wider range of physical activities within our programmes. Dance, Pilates, exercise classes and ‘Park Run’ style programmes will all be part of our broad SPA offer.

An inspirational, dynamic and motivated Director of Sport & Physical Activity would have the opportunity to join us and lead the operationalisation of the strategy, optimising our use of the HFC. This is an exciting role, with a broad remit. It presents the candidate with an opportunity to make a significant difference to the education and wellbeing of a large community. There are three key elements:

  • leading the delivery of a coherent set of curricular and co-curricular SPA programmes that must encompass both traditional school sports and new physical activity opportunities for girls;
  • leading College’s use of its sport programmes and facilities to engage partners and stakeholders such as feeder schools, parents and Guild (the alumnae association);
  • overseeing the use of the facilities and operations to optimise the SPA strategy and meet income generation targets set for the HFC, supported by the HFC Manager.

We welcome applications from leaders and managers from both within and from outside of the secondary education sector, and those with vision and potential as well as those with experience.

"Girls enrolling in College are highly likely to see in the turn of the next century, living lives of unprecedented longevity. Their world will be full of promise, choice and possibility on a scale that has not been true for any generation of women that has preceded them.

“Leading this energetic, talented and caring community of staff and pupils is an extraordinary privilege. We have a unique and inspiring pioneering heritage which we cherish, and we have a very exciting future. We would love you to be a part of it.”

Eve Jardine-Young, Principal

College first opened its doors in February 1854 with the purpose of providing girls with a thorough academic education. We have remained committed to that pioneering goal, while adapting to a complex and changing world. Today we are one of the largest school communities of boarding and day girls in Europe, allowing us to provide a rich holistic curriculum. Approximately 850 pupils from 40 countries across the world benefit from the knowledge and expertise gained over the last 160 years of putting girls first.

Our motivated and able pupils genuinely want to learn, and consistently achieve results at the very highest level in GCSE, A Level, Pre-U and IB examinations. For the teachers who can nurture such achievement, we offer excellent resources, professional support and personal development. In addition, we have a dedicated team that manages evening and weekend boarding duties, so you can focus on what you do best: inspiring your classes.

You can also look forward to a wonderful working environment right at the heart of Cheltenham. Described as the cultural centre of the Cotswolds, this elegant and thriving town offers excellent transport links to the South West or Midlands, with the M5 in easy reach. London can be reached in two hours, and Cheltenham’s mainline rail station provides rapid and frequent connections with the rest of the UK.

We believe that there are few better places to live and work – and no better setting within which ambitious teachers can make a positive impact on their pupils’ lives.
