Job overview

We are seeking a friendly, efficient all-rounder to support our Bursar and Registrar and to fulfil general front of school duties. The role requires someone who has excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills (over the phone and in person); is naturally precise and pays attention to detail; and enjoys the buzz of a lively, fun and fast moving school office environment.

In other words: a happy, positive and smiley ‘doer’ who demonstrates a mature and responsible attitude at all times and can keep calm in busy times.

The vacancy

The position is full-time, with preferred working hours of 8am to 5pm during term-time. It is available immediately but we are willing to defer the start date for the right candidate. It comes with about eight weeks of holidays, to be taken during the school holidays, with some flexibility depending on the holiday plans of all team members. We pay competitive salaries, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The probationary period is one year.

Job description

The job consists of multi-faceted roles supporting the Bursar and the Registrar, as well as contributing to the smooth running of the School Office, including being one of “the faces of the school” to parents and prospective parents. It will be reporting to the Bursar but also support other office staff and senior staff members.

The main duties and responsibilities will be tailored to suit the qualifications, experience, capabilities and availability of the successful candidate as well as to support the Office’s overall requirements and particularly those of the Bursar.

How to apply

Please visit the vacancies page on our website (www.hernehillschool.co.uk under "Contact us") to view the job description and to download the application form. Herne Hill School is a well-established independent Pre-Preparatory and Pre-School in South London. It is the largest stand-alone independent school in the country focusing exclusively on Early Childhood Education for two-year-olds through to Year 2.

Since its foundation in 1976, it has had only one purpose: providing young children with the best possible start for a successful and balanced academic life. There are about 300 pupils on roll, split into the Kindergarten at our new, dedicated and state-of-the art site at 99 Herne Hill, which then feeds into Pre-Reception, Reception, Year 1 and ultimately Year 2 classes at our main site at 127 Herne Hill.

There are approximately 70 staff members (about 25 teachers and peripatetic instructors, 40 teaching assistants and five support staff), who are overseen by the Headteacher, Ngaire Telford, and the Director/Proprietor, Dominik Magyar. Everyone works towards fulfilling our common purpose:

“At Herne Hill School, we prepare young children for life …

by providing the finest individual education …

… based on a bedrock of love and care.”

The school’s ethos of Love ∙ Care ∙ Excellence encapsulates our commitment to excellence and our belief that love and care are prerequisites for a top-quality education. The school’s atmosphere lives this philosophy. It is a caring, friendly, fun, supportive and well-resourced environment conducive to optimal learning and development.

Our website and the last ISI inspection report, which can also be found there, provide a good overview of our values, approach to teaching and learning and modus operandi.

Candidates who would like to see more detailed information on the school’s provision and daily life can email our Registrar Catherine Ross at enquiries@hernehillschool.co.uk to request access to the password-protected Prospective Parent Area on our website.
