The School:

Merchant Taylors’ School is a large Independent Boys’ School, situated in 286 acres of parkland in Northwood, Middlesex. The School was founded in 1561, is owned by the Merchant Taylors’ Educational Trust and moved to its present site in 1933. There are four distinct boys’ day schools on campus. The Nursery, the Pre-Prep & the Prep cater for 340 boys, while the Senior School has some 933 pupils. The School employs over 140 teachers and 160 Support staff across Merchant Taylors’ School.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• To ensure that all paths and external areas are clear from debris and maintained throughout the year (clear of ice and snow in the winter). 

• The safe use of pesticides and other treatments in line with COSHH regulations.

• Day to day care, cultivation and maintenance of ornamental landscapes e.g. weeding, mulching, pruning and planting. 

• Day to day tidying-up of hard landscaping and grounds e.g. blowing, sweeping, and leaf collection and removal. 

• Safe use of horticultural tools and machinery, and their care, cleaning and storage after use. 

• Ensuring lawns and sports turf are regularly cut, strimmed and edged of, and to undertake grass repairs where necessary. 

• Assistance with preparation of hard courts, artificial turf and pitch marking. 

• Greenhouse plant care for e.g. tender plants, bedding, plugs and bulbs grown and propagation.

• To maintain planter displays throughout the school and for school events.

• Spreading of grit salt during periods of ice and manual snow clearance from footpaths.

• Any other reasonable duties taking into account ability, training, experience and qualifications

• Undertake any other duties reasonably required of the post.

Hours:

8.00 am – 5.00 pm               Monday to Friday

8.00 am – 12.00 noon         One in four Saturdays

                                                (Autumn and Spring Term)

8.00 am – 12 noon                Alternative Saturdays

                                                 (Summer Term Only)

Some extra hours will be required during the summer term to cope with the demands of cricket at the school.

The hours worked will be 40 hours per week on average over the year (shorter working week in the winter)

One hour unpaid lunch.
