If you are an experienced and passionate gardener with a passion for plants and an extensive knowledge of horticultural operations, then an exciting opportunity exists at Uppingham School within their excellent Gardens Team.

Uppingham School is located on a large estate encompassing extensive gardens and a wide variety of plants, shrubs and landscaped areas. We possess 15 unique and varied gardens from English woodland to modern contemporary style, as well as 3 large communal garden areas with wide and varied planting schemes. Certain gardens at Uppingham have been designed by 6 times Chelsea gold medal winning Robert Myers. 

Uppingham's Gardens team strives to achieve National Trust standards and RHS quality. To attain this standard, you will assist the team in the maintenance, development and improvement of the school’s extensive gardens, producing high-quality work that creates excellent visual impact for pupils, parents, visitors, staff and the Uppingham community to enjoy. You will also support in the designing, growing and planting of both the town’s and the school’s large floral displays for Uppingham in bloom and the Britain in Bloom competitions. 

You will be a knowledgeable and committed gardener, providing experience in horticultural operations, whilst also demonstrating proficiency and good basic horticultural techniques with tools and machinery. Excellent verbal communication skills as well as the ability to respond well to verbal instruction is essential, including a will to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. A wide variety of city and guilds/Lantra training will be given to the successful candidate, developing your skills within the industry as well as familiarising you with the state-of-the-art machinery used at Uppingham School. A full driving license is desirable. 

Working hours are 39 hours per week, 52 weeks per year. Normal hours are 8am to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday, 8am to 3.30pm on a Friday, with 2 half an hour breaks during the day.

Uppingham School is a mixed, Church of England independent secondary school with sixth form and boarding, located in Leicestershire. The secondary school, situated in Uppingham has approximately 791 students on record.

Uppingham School was founded in 1584, originally as a school for boys. In 1975 girls were admitted, and it became fully co-educational as of 2001. The majority of students attending the secondary school are boarders.

Work is generally presented neatly and pupils’ note-taking is effective. They develop good numeracy skills and their capacity to think critically is notable. Creative abilities are well developed and their exploration of ideas is particularly marked in their enrichment activities. Pupils’ study habits are good. In the lessons observed, pupils worked very well with each other, and also worked well independently. They enjoy their work and this stems in part from the good-natured atmosphere in lessons.
