Job Title: General Maintenance Worker 

 Job Purpose: The key function will be to undertake all maintenance related activities to meet the needs of the school.  The role should ensure that the whole school site is maintained to an excellent standard and provide a good impression to all visitors to the school, parents, students and staff. 

 In addition, as a member of the estates team, it will be your role to undertake a range of general support activities concerned with the school premises and ancillary duties to support the operation of the school.   

 MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 Maintenance of School Premises • Painting and decorating • Minor repairs to fabric of building and fixtures & fittings • In the absence of the Estates Manager, lead in work planning and first response to reactive maintenance requests • Maintenance of the school grounds; grass cutting, pitch marking, general gardening 

Security  • Carrying out security procedures for school buildings and grounds • The routine and non-routine opening and closing of school premises and grounds • Preventing trespass on the school premises or grounds and, in some cases, ensuring that unauthorised parking of vehicles does not occur • Respond when the school alarm system is activated and arrange for the system to be re-set, including out of hours response as part of a rota 

Lighting & Heating • Operating and heating plant and endeavouring to ensure that required temperatures are maintained in school premises and that an adequate supply of hot water is available. Carrying out frost precaution procedures. • Maintaining the boiler house and plant in a clean and tidy order and ensuring clear access to all service isolators (Gas, Electricity, Water) • Safe management of flammable materials  

 NB Work at high level (e.g. in Gymnasium, Walker Hall, stair wells must be carried out with a safe system of work) 

 

Lettings: • Carry out duties arising from lettings, including opening and securing the school, providing furniture/equipment as required, minor cleaning arising from the lettings 

 Portage: • Put out refuse and waste for regular collection • Move furniture and other items when necessary • Arrange rooms for meetings at the request of the Senior Management Team. 

 Vehicles  • Maintain and keep clean two minibuses and estates SUV • Driving of minibuses as timetable demands, including school trips & visits 

 Other Duties: • To undertake any emergency cleaning that may be required • Other tasks as directed by Estates Manager 

 

QUALIFICATIONS\EXPERIENCE 

Relevant experience in grounds maintenance & gardening (desired) Appropriate football foundation pitch maintenance qualifications, or willing to train to obtain Painting & decorating experience (desired) General building experience (desired) Clean driving licence, including D1 (essential) Mechanical & Electrical knowledge an advantage 

 ESSENTIAL ATTRIBUTES 

Ability to work flexible hours Excellent team player, who gets along well with others Good general health, so able to undertake physically demanding tasks at times Agile approach to tasks and willingness to change plans to meet ever changing requirements A good sense of humour

 SUPERVISION RECEIVED Estates Manager 

 PRINCIPAL CONTACTS Estates Manager, Bursar, PE staff, teaching and support staff, senior managers, parents, governors, contractors and other service providers. 

 SPECIAL CONDITIONS Education is an ever-changing service and all staff are expected to participate constructively in the school’s activities and to adopt a flexible approach to their work.
