Fixed Term Contract– 1 September 2020 – 9 July 2021

Background 

The Abbey School is an independent GSA day school for girls aged 3 to 18 years. Accountability 

• The Head has overall responsibility for all employees of The Abbey School and this is delegated to Heads of Department. The Head of Finance and Resources is responsible for the management of the support staff.

• This post is within the Languages Department and the post holder is directly responsible to the Head of German.

• The post holder is not responsible for any other members of staff.


Key responsibilities 

• Work with the team in the Modern Foreign Languages Department, collaborating with teaching staff to support the planning and delivering of German lessons and any other language based activities at the school. 

• Help with creating teaching materials, organising language experiences for students such as language competitions, preparing displays of pupils’ work. 

• Attend staff and other meetings as required. 

• Prepare resources and research specific topics. 

• Work with small groups of pupils or in one to one situations to develop the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as specific examination techniques.

Person Specification 

The ideal candidate is likely to have some or all of the following: 

• Organisational skills 

• Fluency in German (native speaker standard) 

• Interest in German culture, politics and current issues 

• Excellent interpersonal skills 

• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines 

• Enjoyment of working with children and young adults 


Qualifications and Experience 

• Experience of working in Education working with young people (desirable) 

• Fluency in spoken and written English and German is required 

• Technology Literate 


Holiday Entitlement 

• You are entitled to 25 days' paid holiday during each holiday year.  In addition, you are entitled to take the eight public holidays in England or a day in lieu where we require you to work on a public holiday.  Part-time Employees will accrue annual holiday entitlement on a pro-rata basis.  The School's holiday year runs between 1 September and 31 August.  If your employment starts or finishes part way through the holiday year, your holiday entitlement during that year shall be calculated on a pro-rata basis.


Salary and Benefits 

• Salary is paid at £18.73 per hour. You will be paid monthly and in arrears. 

• Lunches are available free of charge. 

• Parking is normally available, but not guaranteed. 


Hours of Work 

• 8 hours per week, during School term time only including all INSET Days/Staff Training Days.

• To co-operate with employers in order to ensure that employers’ duties can be performed and complied with.

• To neither intentionally, nor recklessly, interfere with any equipment provided. 


Security 

All employees are required to remain vigilant on the school premises and to report any security issues to the Head of Finance and Resources immediately. 

Child Protection 

• The Abbey School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. 

• This post may involve unsupervised contact with children and young people. The School therefore expects from the successful candidate the level and degree of adult leadership of children and young people expected in a School environment. 

• The successful candidate should expect to undertake the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance process.

The Abbey School is a dynamic and vibrant community of more than 1,000 girls aged 3-18.

The Abbey is always in the top division nationally in academic terms. This year's A-levels were excellent with 75% at A*- B and at GCSE 88% gained 9-7 grades. Annually the average International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma result is between 38 - 40 points, with more than two thirds of the cohort scoring 38 points or higher, at a level equivalent to or exceeding the Oxford and Cambridge conditional offer range. In the School's 12 year IB history several students have gained the full 45 points possible. Leavers go on to an impressive list of universities and courses. 

The school places great emphasis on providing a breadth of sporting and cultural challenges and opportunities for each student. Students are presented with the chance for exploration both within the curriculum and in Music, Drama, Sport, DofE and the wide variety of clubs and trips. The Jane Austen Wing at the Senior School has modern classrooms for Humanities as well as bright Art studios and enhanced ICT facilities. The IB has widened the options for Sixth Formers who can also choose their desired A-level combination from a wide range of subjects.    

The Abbey Junior School (ages 3 - 11) offers a broad curriculum and the atmosphere is friendly, lively, purposeful and fun.

There is a range of scholarships and financial assistance is offered to able students through means-tested bursaries which may cover up to 100% of fees for exceptional candidates.
