Job overview

Founded in 1862, Haileybury is a school that is rooted in history and tradition; however, it is also an innovative, progressive institution that seeks to provide the best possible education for all of our boys and girls. Pupils here are known and valued and are supported along their own pathways. We are an outward-facing institution, underpinned by values built on service and humility.

German Literature Teacher

The German department at Haileybury is a young, vibrant department established in September 2018. At a time when German numbers are facing a national decline in schools, we are extremely proud that Haileybury values the importance of German in today’s world.

German is taught from Lower School 2 (Year 8) through to the Sixth Form at both A Level and IB Diploma (German A and German B), with healthy numbers for IGCSE. Exchanges, trips and visits supplement the learning in the classroom. We currently have one full-time teacher and one part-time teacher, and are looking forward to growing the department.

The German department prides itself on its passion for German language and culture, as well as delivering  well- structured and engaging lessons.

The successful applicant will echo this ethos, and will teach the exciting IB Diploma German A Literature course to the native German pupils at the school. At Haileybury we are extremely lucky to have a large cohort of German pupils, and consequently this course is highly popular.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in teaching German Literature, and be able to convey a clear passion for their subject to their students in their lessons. Familiarity with the new German A course would be desirable. The role would also require the teaching of a ‘pre-IB’ German Literature course to the Year 11 native German pupils in preparation for their German Literature studies in the Sixth Form. In addition to this, the successful applicant will teach German language and literature to the non-native pupils in the Sixth Form, in the form of either the IB course German B, or German A Level, and potentially also to pupils lower down in the school.

This is an exciting role which uniquely combines nurturing non-native pupils’ language acquisition, with deepening German pupils’ appreciation of their own literature, whilst simultaneously contributing to a growing department

Haileybury offers a world of opportunity for talented girls and boys who wish to contribute fully to our happy and purposeful community. “We provide a holistic education that balances academic achievement with the development of character, resilience and leadership”

We are academically selective and we expect our pupils to achieve excellent results in public examinations. Most of our pupils take up places at the best universities in the UK and around the world. In addition to providing intellectual rigour and challenge, we provide a holistic education that balances academic achievement with the development of character, resilience and leadership. All of our boys and girls are strongly encouraged to take full advantage of the widest range of co-curricular activities on offer at Haileybury. Participation in these activities stretches the pupils; it promotes a sense of social responsibility, enhances team spirit and engenders confidence.

The bedrock of a Haileybury education is outstanding pastoral care. A nurturing environment and spiritual encouragement underpin all of our endeavours and help shape the distinctive characteristics of Haileyburians.

Our goal is for our young men and women to leave Haileybury fully equipped with the life skills and the academic credentials necessary for them to flourish in a competitive global employment market.

We also hope that they leave the school fulfilled, proud of their achievements and full of compassion for others. If our ethos resonates with you, please do come and visit Haileybury. It would be our pleasure to show you around.
