About Colombo International School

Colombo International School was established in 1982. The School is a pioneer and premier International School in Sri Lanka. It is an independent, fee-levying, co-educational day School.

The 3 sections of the School are located on the same site in Colombo 7, an attractive residential and tree-lined part of the capital city.

The Infant Section has over 300 pupils aged 3+ to 6 years and they are located in a purpose built separate spacious building.

The Junior Section of over 360 pupils is housed in a purpose built modern School building. The building contains a fine library, art room, hall, computer room, music and drama areas as well as conventional classrooms.

The Senior Section has more than 800 pupils from Year 7 to the Year 13 Level. The School has a modern library, 5 purpose built science laboratories, 3 computer rooms with 70+ machines which are networked. The latest version of the SIMS Management and Information System is in operation at the School. Several new classroom blocks, facilities and resources have been introduced by the School.

The School (Colombo and Kandy branches) has gradually expanded over the years to reach the present enrolment of 2300 students, aged 3-18 (the majority of whom are Sri Lankan).

The School has a fine and modern fully equipped auditorium equipped to International Standards.

Other facilities include 2 swimming pools.

Students are prepared for the IGCSE/GCSE Level, GCE/IAL Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced (A) Level examinations in a broad and balanced range of subjects. All examinations taken are through the London Edexcel or AQA Boards. In 2015 there was a pass rate of over 98% at A2 Level, with 83% A/B/C grades. 42% of all grades achieved were grade A*/A, in a Sixth Form that numbers 290 students.

Nearly all the students go to Universities overseas, and there are currently past students at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, the London School of Economics, Bristol, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Stanford, Melbourne, and other top Universities in the UK, USA and Australia.

The School has a strong extra-curricular tradition involving sport, drama and numerous societies.

The fully qualified academic staff are mostly Sri Lankan with up to 20% being British Expatriates, who initially enter into 2 year contracts and many stay for much longer.

British teachers have the opportunity to work with good examination classes and the experience is valuable for career progression going forward.

It is the policy of the school to have British nationals from UK with appropriate qualifications and experience to be the Principal.
