Description The Director of Schools invites applications from suitably qualified, experienced and highly motivated personnel for the position of Gifted Education Mentor Project Officer (K-12). This position is full-time (1.0 FTE) commencing in Term 1, 2022 on an initial (2) year temporary contract or secondment for a teacher who holds a substantive position within a school in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.



The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) is responsible for the leadership, operation and management of systemic schools that educate more than 19,000 students in 46 Primary schools, 12 Secondary schools and one K–12 school in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.
Position Requirements Gifted Education Mentor K-12 Project Officers are expected to meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) required by the NSW Education Standards Authority. These standards are reflected in this role description, working toward Highly Accomplished Teacher level.

Gifted Education Mentor K-12 Project Officers are employed by the Catholic Schools Office in a full-time capacity. The position will be based in a cluster of allocated schools, as well as one day per week in our office at Newcastle West.

The purpose of this position is to build the capacity of staff to meet the educational needs of gifted learners. The role will work collegiately with the Education Officers (Gifted Education), and with the staff of allocated cluster schools. The position also plays an important role in contributing to the creation of a network of shared expertise in gifted education in the diocese.

The Gifted Education Mentor K-12 Project Officer will be allocated a maximum of four schools in the diocese. One day per week will be spent working with staff and students on-site at each of these schools and could include (but not limited to) team teaching, programming, creating resources and delivering professional learning. The remaining day per week would be spent as a team engaging in professional learning and collaborating with fellow Gifted Education Mentor Project Officers and Education Officers (Gifted Education). Some travel would be required between locations during each week.

The Gifted Education Mentor K-12 Project Officers aims to:


• Build the knowledge of giftedness and appropriate pedagogies in their allocated schools


• Increase staff capacity in differentiated programming and assessment by planning and leading ongoing professional learning for their allocated schools


• Contribute to the creation of a network of shared expertise in gifted education in the diocese.

Essential Criteria ► Ability to articulate a clear understanding of and a personal commitment to Catholic education and the mission of the Church through Catholic schools
► The applicant should have a four-year trained teacher classification with at least four years successful teaching experience consistent with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in either primary or secondary setting
► Ability to lead in the provision of a stimulating and enriching learning environment to enable students to explore and build on their gifts.
► Proven strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage with all key stakeholders sensitively and actively, and demonstrated capacity to build solid trusting relationships with students, staff, and parents
► Demonstrated understanding of relevant CSO policy on gifted education and the capacity to implement relevant plans and policies to ensure strong governance
► Willingness to comply with the CSO Accreditation to Work, Teach and Lead Policy. Category C: Accreditation for Leadership

The applicant must provide evidence of the following:
► NESA Teacher Accreditation at least at proficient level
► Working with Children Check number
► Completion of anaphylaxis training
Proof of Covid vaccination status.
Desirable Criteria ► Consider further study for example, post graduate studies in gifted education
► Demonstrated ability to articulate and create a shared improvement, innovation and change agenda that align with system priorities and embed a culture of high expectation of student learning and evidence-based high impact teacher practice for gifted learners.
► Strong professional learning record in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy and/or gifted learners
► An ability to effectively analyse and respond to student data on gifted education to enhance learning outcomes.
► Demonstrated ability to effectively optimise the school’s human, financial and physical resources to deliver high quality organisational and educational outcomes for gifted learners

Conditions of EmploymentConditions and salary commensurate with the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle Catholic Schools Office Employees Enterprise Agreement 2019-2021. Edu & Prof Officers Level 2.2 $115,892 per annum.
