Job overview

Do you want to make a difference to the lives of young adults? Are you interested in shaping the strategy and character of your local Sixth Form College? Are you looking for a new challenge in the new year? Then why not volunteer at our college as a Governor

What is the role of a governor?

The role of a Governor is a serious, yet extremely rewarding duty, and we are looking for volunteers from a range of backgrounds, along with a keen interest in the College and the education of young people. Governors are at the heart of how our college operates and you will have an opportunity to make an important contribution to the life of a college and its students helping to ensure that it’s run well and serves the needs of local people. The governing body, together with the Principal, constitutes the highest level of decision making at the College, having overall responsibility for the strategic direction and financial health of the institution.

What are the benefits of being a governor?

You’ll be using your expertise to make a difference to the life chances of young people and adults in your community. You’ll also be helping to ensure that your region has a skilled, well-trained workforce, which in turn has a positive impact on the economy. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your own skills and experience in strategic planning, leadership, financial management, data analysis, communication and negotiation. While the role is unpaid, the personal and professional benefits are significant.

What are we looking for?

We are particularly looking for Governors who have skills and experience in the following areas:

Finance/audit

Education/safeguarding/special needs

Construction

What are the different types of Governor?

We have a number of different Governor roles available:

Foundation Governor

Foundation governors have an important part to play in ensuring the Catholic character of our schools and in building the community of Catholic schools throughout the diocese. Foundation governors are volunteers who serve as the Bishop’s representative to assist in leading our Catholic schools. In order to become a foundation governor you should be a practising Catholic.

Co-opted Governor

A co-opted governor is a person appointed by the governing body and who, in the opinion of the governing body, has the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school. As a co-opted governor, you may have an area of specialist knowledge or experience or bring a wide range of skills and experience to your role as a governor.

Parent Governor Normally a parent of a student at the college.

Staff Governor

Just what it sounds. An individual who is a member of staff to ensure that staff views are represented on the governing body.

What is the time commitment?

Governors are expected to attend and contribute to meetings of the full governing body (usually between 3 and 6 per year) and at least one of its sub-committees (approximately a further 3 per year). Outside the formal meetings, you are encouraged to participate in the life of the college; for example, you are welcome to attend college events, meet staff and students.
