Role Introduction

We have a number of exciting fixed-term positions for a Graduate Assistant, starting in September 2021. The successful candidate will gain experience across all aspects of the school but your primary activities will be supporting our extensive co-curricular programme. Alongside this, you will provide general support to an academic department or departments, work with our Outreach and Summer School programmes, help the school deliver our annual calendar of events, and perform House Assistant duties within one of our Boarding Houses. The role is intended to utilize both the subject expertise and the individual enthusiasm of the person appointed.

We believe in providing an all-round education for our pupils, involving them in a deep commitment to the full co-curriculum. Our diverse and busy co-curricular programme enables pupils to identify and develop skills and strengths through a huge variety of activities – from sports to music, art, debating, and theatre.

Please note that we plan to invite shortlisted candidates to an assessment day at Eton College later this year. Whilst we hope to hold these assessment days in April, they could be delayed or conducted virtually due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19. Further information will be given nearer the time.

Main Duties

  • Acting as an exam invigilator;
  • Contributing to the school’s ‘socials’ programme;
  • Providing logistical and administrative support to the Lower Master’s Office and Events Manager during major events, including (but not limited to), the school’s two major open days, Parent-Teacher meetings, and supervision of transport during the start and end of school holidays;
  • Working with the Summer Schools team to help deliver our Summer Schools’ programme;
  • Under the direction of the House Master, performing weekly House Assistant duties within one of the school’s boarding houses;
  • Supporting the Outreach team activities for and within our partner institutions;
  • Undertaking any other reasonable tasks as requested.

Some Graduate Assistants may also:

  • Undertake some ‘team teaching’ with an experienced Master;

  • Support pupils with university applications during the Michaelmas half.

The Ideal Candidate

  • A desire to be fully involved with the life of a busy boarding-school;
  • Demonstrable experience in a range of sports and/or other co-curricular activities, and the ability to communicate your enthusiasm for those activities;
  • Prior experience of coaching or playing football, rugby or cricket would be advantageous, however if you do not already have this experience, a willingness to learn how to coach a sports team is essential;
  • A strong academic profile, with a good undergraduate degree, and an enthusiasm for a particular academic subject;
  • The demonstrable ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people;

About Eton College

Eton College is a charity for the advancement of education. At its heart sits an independent boys’ boarding school which leads a dynamic range of educational activities and an expanding network of educational partnerships. The charity’s primary purpose, determined from its Christian foundation in 1440, is to draw out the best of young people’s talents and to enable them to flourish and make a positive impact on others through the course of a healthy, happy and fulfilling life. Founded to offer transformative educational opportunities to boys with limited life chances, currently over 100 boys pay no fees at all.

With an extensive curriculum both within and beyond the classroom, a focus on pastoral excellence, and a growing expertise in digital education through its digital education platform, EtonX, Eton College stands in the vanguard of educational developments. Its award-winning flagship embedded research facility, The Tony Little Centre for Innovation and Research in Learning, is at the core of these new developments, informing Eton College's own educational practice, as well as sharing best practice across the sector.

In addition, Eton Connect coordinates over 1,000 cross-sector partnerships between schools, charities and other organisations working together for the benefit of young people and teachers. Through research, digital resources, summer schools, visits and events, Eton Connect brings people together who are determined to increase the range of learning opportunities available to young people. Last year, Eton Connect coordinated activities for over 5,400 state school pupils, with over 2,000 pupils continuing to visit its museums and collections each year.

As it looks forward, the ambitions of the charity will continue to broaden, from maintaining and developing new partnerships to the plans for opening selective state sixth form colleges in partnership with Star Academies in Middlesbrough, Dudley and Oldham. Its partnership with Holyport College, an Ofsted outstanding state-maintained boarding school, is one of the strongest, closest and most reciprocal cross-sector partnerships in the UK. Amongst other partnerships, Eton College also co-sponsors the London Academy of Excellence, an outstanding sixth form in Newham, East London.
