Physical Education (PE) and Sport at KEHS

Sport plays a very important part in school life at KEHS. We aim to combine excellence with high levels of participation: whilst our best teams compete at national level, our curriculum sport is inclusive, and our co-curricular activities provide opportunities for all pupils to flourish and develop a positive approach to movement and exercise for life. The school has outstanding outdoor facilities: five netball courts, seven tennis courts and a grass field for football, cricket and rounders, as well as an excellent athletics track, and two all-weather hockey pitches. Our indoor facilities are of a similarly high standard, boasting a large sports hall, a dance studio, a fully equipped fitness suite and an indoor swimming pool.

The Physical Education Department currently consists of four full-time members of staff, all of whom have played sport at a high level, a PE/Sports Graduate and several part-time professional coaches. Every pupil has opportunities to experience a huge variety of sporting activities within both our curricular and our co-curricular offerings. Our major team sports are hockey and netball, with over 100 fixtures each season; our football, cricket and swimming teams are showing huge potential for success. We run an annual Dance production, which is a key event in the KEHS calendar, involving around 150 dancers from years 7 to 13 in choreographed dance performances.

The culture we have created is the bedrock of our strength: our inclusive selection policy rewards commitment and attitude over performance alone. This helps to ensure that our participation rates at sports clubs are between 70-80% at Key Stage 3 and stay higher than the national average at Key Stages 4 and 5. This, combined with our outstanding performances and results, makes us an exceptional department in which to work. In the last calendar year alone, we reached five national finals and two regional finals. We have also recently been featured as of the top 20 girls’ schools for cricket in The Cricketer magazine, and have been ranked in the top 30 schools for sport in England by School Sports magazine.
