Job overview

Graduate Sports Coach (Netball)/Trainee Teacher

Royal Russell School is offering a fantastic opportunity for a recent graduate to join our two year programme leading to a teaching qualification from September 2019.

We are a forward thinking, innovative school that prides itself on supporting all members of the community to achieve their best.

We would like to hear from graduates who wish to pursue a career in teaching, who are passionate, not just about their subject, but who can also offer leadership in some element of the schools sporting extracurricular programme, and who are interested in gaining experience in teaching.

Our exceptional onsite facilities include, 6 full size grass football pitches, a new Olympic standard floodlit hockey pitch, 2 further new floodlit all-weather games areas for Netball and Tennis. We also have a large well-equipped sports hall, a gymnasium and a 25m indoor swimming pool. The school has full planning permission to build a floodlit 4G football AstroTurf. With further exciting projects in the near future and a nationally successful reputation, sport at Royal Russell offers exceptional opportunities for all our pupils.

Royal Russell will support graduates in their professional development in sports provided within the school. The Graduate Teachers will become members of the academic staff, playing a full role in our busy independent day and boarding school. For suitable candidates we will support and fund (50%) a PGCE course through Buckingham University, so that you will leave Royal Russell with enhanced career prospects and the invaluable experience of teaching and living in a busy independent school.

At the end of the two-year period we would normally expect Graduate Teachers to further their careers in other schools unless a suitable position arises within Royal Russell in the meantime.

The Role:

During the day you will be actively teaching in the classroom or out on the sports field. You will have an academic Mentor within your department to help plan and deliver lessons.

After school you will take part in the full co-curricular programme, and will ideally offer a sport specialism that can be supported by in-house and external training.

There is a wealth of sports, music and drama across Royal Russell School as well as a busy and active CCF and Duke of Edinburgh Award programme.

Accommodation may be available on site, and in the evenings you will expect to carry out a number of boarding duties a week (reduced during your PGCE year). At weekends, there is again a range of sports and activities in place and you will be expected to play a full part in this programme. During the school year there are a number of residential trips abroad that you will have the opportunity to participate in, taking a supervisory role.

We Offer:

Along with the fantastic opportunity to join a top team of colleagues we offer:-

  • On the job training, work experience and a qualification
  • Potential for Accommodation (nominal service charge may be levied depending on individual circumstances and type of accommodation)
  • All meals provided free in term time
  • Part funded (50%) support to undertake a PGCE course (after a successful probationary period and completion of Year One)
  • Academic Mentors and pastoral support to provide help and guidance
  • We will endeavour to support your professional development through specific coaching qualifications in areas agreed by the school and successful candidate.
