Surbiton High School seeks an enthusiastic and outstanding candidate to join our caretaking team.


 

Job Purpose: The Head Caretaker will be responsible for the caretaking team and, in addition, will provide caretaking and maintenance services to all buildings and grounds forming the school site, assisting to ensure a safe and secure environment


Tenure: Full time, Permanent 37.5 Hours per week (flexibility required on hours of work)



Key Responsibilities which should include, but not be limited to:


Specific:


 

  • To demonstrate and role model constructive leadership behaviours including:
     
    • Providing encouragement, support and assistance to colleagues at all levels.   
    • Managing the performance of all caretaking staff in line with current legislation and United Learning policy and procedure   
    • Being aware of and able to positively influence staff morale         
  • To ensure that the Facilities Manager is kept informed of the status of school events, external lets and outstanding jobs and is immediately informed of problems / issues so they can be escalated where necessary   
  • To ensure that caretaking requests are well monitored and reflect the current status of outstanding work   
  • To ensure relevant records are kept (including, but not limited to fire procedures and arrangements, training records, certificates for the installation and maintenance of equipment)   
  • To carry out regular checks, walking the site on a weekly basis. Regular checks to include:
     
    • Ensuring that fire escape routes and fire exit doors are kept unobstructed and that fire doors operate correctly   
    • Ensuring signs and notices are in place   
    • Ensuring emergency lighting is in place   
    • Ensuring call point testing of the fire systems at each site takes place weekly at 11am   
    • Ensuring records are kept in hard copy logbooks which are located adjacent to the fire control panels in each site         
  • To delegate and complete all tasks to meet daily/weekly schedules and satisfy schools’ needs    
  • To manage relationships with contractors and service providers    
  • To uphold a caretaking rolling programme in consultation with the Facilities Manager In liaison with the Facilities Manager, create an annual estimate of expenditure relating to Caretaking needs   
  • To monitor equipment inventory and place orders when necessary    
  • To identify H&S training needs and co-ordinate as necessary in consultation with the Facilities Manager   
  • To perform administrative tasks within the Caretaking team as required    
  • Where necessary, to deputise for the Facilities Manager in times of absence   
  • To manage requirements for external lets and coordinate bookings

Experience


 

  • Experience of managing people is essential    
  • Be able to carry out general repairs and maintenance to a high standard   
  • Be computer literate   
  • Have practical knowledge of vehicle and machinery maintenance   
  • Experience of driving a minibus preferable, with D1 or equivalent    
  • Possess a clean driving licence   
  • First Aid (training could be offered)
