Job overview

Head of The Maynard School, Exeter

For September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter

This is an exceptional opportunity to lead the South West’s top independent day school for girls aged 4 – 18 years. We are seeking an ambitious senior leader with demonstrable leadership and management experience gained at Head, Deputy, Assistant or Boarding Head level to join our team.

Founded in 1658, The Maynard is the oldest girls’ school in the country and we pride ourselves on a unique blend of tradition mixed with innovation and forward thinking. We are an academically selective school and year-on-year we are the leading independent school in Devon according to both GCSE and A-level league tables.

However, there is so much more to a Maynard education than just academic achievement and we place heavy emphasis on an all-round, holistic approach with a broad and enriching curriculum jam-packed with opportunity for all, further extended by a vast extra-curricular offering including over more than 60 different clubs and activities.

The quintessential ingredient to our overarching success is the size of The Maynard. As a smaller school of 450 students across the Pre-Prep through to the Sixth Form, we nurture a culture of diversity and inclusion where every individual is valued and encouraged to develop her own ‘brand’.

Our award-winning pastoral care provision is at the core of school’s vision because we firmly believe that a happy school is a successful school. Ours is a caring and collaborative working environment within a hugely supportive network and, rest assured, the successful candidate will be walking into a school with a uniqueness that is truly special.

The Governors are seeking to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic Head with proven leaderships skills and a strong business acumen to build on the remarkable success of Sarah Dunn who is retiring from teaching in September 2022.

Further information on The Maynard School can be found via the website: www.maynard.co.uk.

Interested applicants who wish to discuss the post in confidence are most welcome to speak to the Headmistress, Sarah Dunn (in the first instance, please email her PA: zoecunningham@maynard.co.uk who will arrange a mutually convenient time to talk) and/or the Governors’ external advisor, Peter Mason, on 01765 635475 or email: PRMyorks@aol.com

Covering letters, CVs and application forms should be submitted by 9:00am on Wednesday 23 February 2022 to zoecunningham@maynard.co.uk

The Maynard School is committed to the safeguarding of all young people and child protection screening is applied to all posts.

About The Maynard School

Welcome to The Maynard School!

Set in a leafy area of central Exeter in Devon, we are the leading independent day school for girls aged 4 -18 (Reception – Year 13) in the South West.

Steeped in a rich history dating back to 1658, The Maynard today is so much more than a top academic school. Over the years we have built an outstanding reputation for excellence in the Arts, Music and Sport whilst our pastoral care is widely regarded as second to none.

We are a School where happy girls carve for themselves successful futures, create everlasting friendships and enduring childhood memories.

As the second oldest girls’ school in the country, we pride ourselves on being experts in educating girls. Statistically it is a proven fact that girls in single-sex schools outperform their peers and the Maynard’s long history is testament to this success.

We are an academically selective school and our students achieve outstanding public examination results year-on-year. League tables consistently place us as one of the highest performing schools in the South West.

However, a Maynard education isn’t just about academic achievement. It is about so much more; we boast numerous individual and team champions in the sporting arena with access to some of the best facilities available; we celebrate our femininity and are proud to offer Food & Nutrition and Textiles & Fashion classes as a life-skill; we are one of the highest achieving schools for music and drama in the county; we relish our timetable packed with trips and workshops to be enjoyed by the whole school. But we take our greatest pride from the happy, ambitious and successful students with whom we have the pleasure to work with each day!

At its core, The Maynard is an outstanding school that has deep rooted values and a clear moral purpose. We hope that when your daughter departs for the next stage in her life, she will take with her lasting friendships, have fostered a passion for life as well as learning and own the confidence to take on every new adventure.
