Job overview

Head

Canbury School is looking forward to meeting our next talented and inspirational Head.  Canbury is a small independent co-educational senior day school which is as individual as the students we teach.  It is a vibrant, inclusive and tolerant community, established in 1982 to support students who benefit from learning in a small school.

After seven years of outstanding leadership, our Head, Louise Clancy, will be leaving a superb legacy, including our new sixth form.  We are very sad to say goodbye to Ms Clancy but we are excited to meet our next Head to continue Canbury’s journey from January or April 2021.

We teach our students that there are no limits to what they can achieve regardless of their individual needs.  Our very recent ISI inspection report agreed that students throughout the school persevere to solve problems supported by teachers and learning support assistants who establish high expectations, promote a ‘can do’ attitude, and do not accept specific learning or emotional needs as a barrier to achievement or allow students to rely on these as an excuse for lack of ambition.  The excellent pastoral care at the School ensures that the students are ready to make the transition to the next stage in their lives.

We want our new Head to continue in that vein and to bring new vision as an engaging and authentic leader.  If you have boundless energy and positivity, are inspiring, ambitious for students and staff and would relish the challenge of leading this small unique school and of taking it to its next phase, we would love to hear from you.

A competitive salary will be negotiated with the successful candidate based on their skills and experience.

Please contact bursar@canburyschool.co.uk for an application pack.  If you would like to discuss the role prior to application, please contact the Bursar on 020 8549 8622.

Completed applications should be sent to the Chair of Governors at bursar@canburyschool.co.uk or to Canbury School, Kingston Hill, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey  KT2 7LN.  The closing date for the receipt of completed applications is Tuesday 25 February and interviews will take place week commencing 9 March.

Canbury School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.  Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Why Canbury?

We do things differently at Canbury - because we understand that everyone is unique, as such we know that the manner in which we educate and support our students must also embrace those differences to ensure that we harness their individual talents.

If you thrive on seeing the opportunities in a situation, rather than the challenges, then we want to hear from you. We are seeking a talented individual with a ‘can do’ attitude. The Director of Studies will be so much more than the job title.

All staff here act, teach, foster, and mentor in a way designed to bring out the very best in every one of our extraordinary students. We expect the utmost mutual respect from all, and working as part of a team is vital. You should be able to work constructively within a cohesive and busy school.

About our School

Canbury School is an independent day school for boys and girls from the ages of 11 to 18 on the outskirts of London beside Richmond Park. With a total of 75 students on roll, we pride ourselves on truly getting to know each one of our students. All our staff are expected to contribute to the values and ethos of Canbury, making the educational journey for each child stimulating, enjoyable, challenging, and tailored.

We are proud of our broad curriculum, the wide range of qualifications we offer, and the support we are able to provide through small group teaching and, where appropriate, specialist therapists or learning support assistants.

Our School community is a happy and inclusive one, where students support and respect each other. We understand that a child’s well-being is as equally important as their academic achievements, as such we enable students to feel safe, understood, and settled in school.

If you think Canbury School would be a good fit for you, and you for us, we are really looking forward to hearing from you
