Job overview
The Governors of the Royal Grammar School, Guildford (‘RGS’) and Lanesborough are seeking to appoint a new Head of Lanesborough Prep, a long-established and highly regarded school in a quiet residential area of Guildford. After 13 years of exceptional service, the current Head, Mrs Clare Turnbull, is moving within the RGS family to establish the Prep Department of RGS Guildford Dubai.
The appointment will ideally be from September 2020. However, a January 2021 start would also be considered for the right candidate.
Lanesborough was founded in 1930 and acquired by the RGS in 1978 when RGS became independent. Today, Lanesborough operates as a separate academic establishment alongside RGS within the same charity. The Head reports to, and works closely with, the Headmaster of RGS.
As the only boys’ prep school in Guildford, Lanesborough is a thriving, academic school with around 350 boys aged 3-11 on roll. It is well known for its excellent academic and pastoral strengths, alongside outstanding music departments and strong sport and extra-curricular opportunities for all boys. In the last couple of years, a new performance space and a new sports hall have been opened. Lanesborough also serves as the choir school for Guildford Cathedral. The ISI assessed Lanesborough as excellent in all areas in its December 2019 inspection.
The Governors seek an individual with warmth, energy, outstanding leadership and first-class communication skills, who is excited to be working within the RGS family at a school that is extremely well renowned and regarded. This is a school where ‘the warmth of the community and the enthusiasm of the staff and boys give it a unique character’.

About Lanesborough School
Lanesborough School, first established in 1930, is an independent pre-preparatory and prep school. It caters for around 360 boys aged 3-11. The school is located in Guildford, Surrey, and often serves as a “feeder school” to the nearby Royal Grammar School.
Since its founding, the school has seen extensive expansion, with numerous new buildings and facilities being added. Although owned by the same governing body as the Royal Grammar School, Lanesborough is independently run, and as such transference to the Royal Grammar School at the age of 11 is not guaranteed.

Values and vision
The primary aim of Lanesborough School is to provide an outstanding academic grounding, enabling boys to succeed in later life. Lanesborough sets rigorous academic standards and invests heavily in its teaching facilities. An individual focus on students is of paramount importance, with teachers working hard to ensure self-confidence in pupils and that achievement is properly rewarded. The school also provides a great deal in the way of extra-curricular activities.
ISI report
“The pupils’ personal development is outstandingly well developed and fostered by the school’s positive ethos. Their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent and reflects the school’s values. Relationships between pupils and teachers and between themselves are excellent.”
