Job overview

South Island School seeks to appoint an outstanding Head of Art. For the right applicant, this role may be combined with the role of Head of Creative Arts as also currently advertised, so applicants may wish to put in a simultaneous application for both roles. However, we equally welcome both external and internal applicants who wish to apply only for the role of Head of Art.

As Head of Art, your role will be to coordinate the team within the department, ensuring that planning, delivery and evaluation of the Art curricula are carried out effectively. You will report to the Head of Creative Arts (or to a member of the South Island School Leadership Team if the two roles are combined). As a Head of Department, you will be a member of the Academic Leadership Team (ALT), and your role will include ensuring that each of these subject areas is fully represented in whole school academic decisions.

The successful applicant will be a highly skilled teacher, with the ability to motivate, inspire and engage with students in creative and innovate ways, both within and outside the classroom. You will be a skilled manager and leader, as you work with Art Department staff towards our overall goal of ensuring excellent educational outcomes for all of our students. Like all staff, you will also be a tutor within our Pastoral Learning Curriculum (PLC), and will be expected to contribute regularly to our Values in Action and Making a Difference extra-curricular programmes.

Previous experience of IBMYP, (I)GCSE and IBDP/IBCP would be a definite advantage. The role will include collaborating with the Head of Creative Arts and other heads of department to plan the Visual Arts components within the MYP, ensuring appropriate representation for Visual Arts within the overall MYP programme. You will also be the lead teacher for Art & Design at IGCSE level and for Visual Arts within the IBDP, also liaising with the IBCP Team regarding Art-related elements.

The position will be a full-time renewable contract for an initial two year period from August 2019.
