Job overview

This is a great opportunity for an outstanding teacher and leader with considerable experience and expertise in Fine Art and other media, including digital, to maintain and develop the high standards reached in our dynamic Art Department.

We are looking for someone with skill and imagination, who can challenge our talented pupils to enjoy Art and Design and who has the insight and enthusiasm to teach these subjects at the highest level in an engaging and adventurous way.

Art is one of our leading departments and is a compulsory subject to the end of Year 9 when it becomes one of the many options that students may choose to pursue to GCSE and beyond to A level. Our approach at A level is to introduce students to a range of media and we have specialists in the department in photography, textiles, ceramics and digital art.

The ability to lead a committed team, the confidence to work independently and the need to create an inspiring environment are essential for the successful applicant.

Adventurous Learning is at the heart of our school and all teachers are expected to contribute to our thriving co-curricular programme, which will involve taking students to galleries and other places of interest. Ashford School is both a day and boarding school with pupils from all over the world and sympathy with a boarding school ethos is an expectation.

About Ashford Senior School

Ashford School is one of the UK's leading coeducational independent day and boarding school, founded in 1898, and voted Independent School of the Year 2010/2011.  The school was endorsed as outstandingly successful in every category during the most recent inspection in 2014.  In September 2014, Ashford School became a Teaching School; only one of four Independent Schools in the UK to do so.  There are 850 pupils, comprising Bridge Nursery in Ashford, looking after children of 3 months to three years old; Ashford Prep School in the rural village of Great Chart, a preparatory school for children between 3 and 11, and Ashford School, a senior school for girls and boys aged 11 to 18, occupying a prominent 25+ acre site close to the centre of Ashford and within a short walk of the International Station. There are good rail, road and bus links to Ashford and London (37 minutes) and the school operates its own bus services to outlying villages.

Teachers at Ashford enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff.  All teachers act as tutors and are expected to contribute to the co-curricular life of the school. Responding to the needs of the individual student - be it preparing for examinations in after-school classes or guiding the most able through Olympiad problems - is at the heart of the department and School ethos.
