Required for September 2019

Ruislip High School opened in 2006 due to the demand for secondary school places in the local community.  In its short history, Ruislip High School has become a school of choice; it is a school both in, and for, its local community.

In June 2018, Ruislip High School secured another excellent set of external examination results. At GCSE level, 74% of students attained 9-4 grades in both English and Mathematics and 50% for both 9-5 grades.

The school has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly effective individual to set up and lead the special resource provision (SRP) for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The SRP is due to open in September 2020 and will be an inclusion centre within Ruislip High School providing specialist provision for students with a diagnosis of high-functioning autism, including Asperger’s syndrome. The centre will provide support from specialist staff, including teachers and teaching assistants.

As the successful candidate for this role will know well, students with needs on the autistic spectrum are often capable of high academic achievement, but the severe anxiety they can experience and the difficulties they may have responding to certain social cues mean that they find the school environment very challenging. The SRP’s aim is to provide students with an emotionally secure base within the school and the personalised support, both in and out of lessons, to help them participate, progress and achieve both in the centre and alongside their peers in mainstream lessons.

Admissions to the SRP will be through the SEN team at Hillingdon, based on need and suitability of the SRP for each individual child. It is anticipated that the SRP will have three students in each year group, starting with Year 7 and building up to be full with fifteen students in September 2024, although there may be some variation in numbers per year group.

The successful candidate will start in September 2019 in order to ensure that the SRP is fully prepared for the first intake in September 2020. The role will also involve deputising for the SENCo. The school will support the successful candidate with required training including the NASENCO award and other specialist ASD training.

The successful applicant will:

  • be a champion for students with ASD
  • have a good understanding of the current educational developments, especially those relating to ASD provision
  • be an excellent and ambitious classroom teacher
  • have the highest expectations of students
  • have an enthusiastic and positive approach within and beyond the classroom
  • have energy, stamina and a sense of humour
  • be willing to contribute to the extra-curricular programme, including residential trips
