Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a Head of Boarding / Housemaster/Housemistress at Terra Nova School for September 2019. This is an exciting time to assume leadership of this important aspect of Terra Nova life as the school looks to develop its strategic plan, in which boarding is expected to play an integral part and the successful candidate a significant role, as we welcome international boarders for the first time.

The role is open to either male or female applicants and we would also welcome a couple operating jointly as Houseparents. The Head of Boarding will work alongside a committed and experienced team of matrons and tutors and will be responsible to the Deputy Head for all matters related to the Boarding House. The successful candidate will demonstrate sympathy with the vision of Terra Nova, which is to create a forward thinking, internationally minded environment that allows young people to grow, explore, thrive and question.

Terra Nova aims to provide the highest academic standards whilst providing our children with a full programme of extra-curricular activity and giving them a real appreciation of moral and ethical values. Applications are invited from both teachers, who in addition to reduced teaching roles will be wanting to contribute to the wider life of the school, and non-teaching staff looking for a more pastoral role. It will be a requirement of the appointment for the successful candidate to live on site, and suitable, self-contained accommodation will be provided.

We are looking to create a place where children are cared for and nurtured in a safe environment. A place where children come first.

About Terra Nova School

The School

Terra Nova is a leading Prep School for children age 2.5 to 13 years old. It is predominantly a day school, but offers an extended day in which children can stay for supervised Prep, tea, evening activities and overnight. There is, therefore, a thriving boarding community throughout the week.

From your very first visit, you will recognise that there is something special about Terra Nova School, with its successful blend of traditional values and fresh thinking and its wonderfully warm and welcoming atmosphere.

At Terra Nova we firmly believe that children who are happy and inspired succeed. Our broad curriculum, exceptional pastoral care and nurturing environment ensure that our children are both happy and inspired, and that they each develop their individual strengths.

For all at Terra Nova, academic success and good character are integral goals and in their attainment our children benefit from small classes, superb facilities and talented teachers. We are proud of the fact our children gain entrance to a wide range of the UK’s top independent schools and proud to say that their success thereafter is in no small part attributable to their fine start.

The children here take part in a wide variety of co-curricular activities and they each get the opportunity to participate in an array of sports, helping them to learn the importance of teamwork, build resilience and win and lose graciously. Throughout their time at the school, children are encouraged to try new experiences and take risks, which helps to build their self confidence, ignite passions and make lifelong friends.

We are fierce advocates of the traditional prep school model that allows our children to study with us until 13, preserving childhood until they reach their teens. However, whether leaving us at 13+ or at 11+, by the time our children move on to their senior school they are assured, motivated young people, well prepared to thrive and deal with the excitements and challenges that lie ahead.

I encourage you to come and visit us in our magnificent 35 acre rural setting, across from the awe-inspiring, internationally renowned Lovell Telescope, so that you can see for yourself what makes Terra Nova such an outstanding school.
