Job overview

The Role

We are seeking a committed, ambitious and inspiring Head of Business/ICT to lead a progressive and well-resourced department. The academy would like to appoint someone who is passionate about the subjects and their value in the curriculum and will be committed to their own development as a senior leader in time.

The department plays a pivotal role in our curriculum offer. As one of our most popular department selections at GCSE and A Level, you will have the vision to expand the department and explore practical experiences for pupils in a wide range of business settings across multiple sectors to enhance the learning of our students.

You will have a track record of improvement and some experience of leading staff. You must have the ability to create a clear strategy to enhance and develop the department in achieving academic excellence. We will give you the freedom, autonomy and support to adapt and review the Business/ICT curriculum in line with our vision. The role would suit best an experienced practitioner in a combination of the following subjects: Business, IT, Computer Science, Accounting and/or ESports.

You will need to be someone who cares, both for our students and for your team. We pride ourselves on the unity of our staff and our departments. The Highcrest family is an important part of academy life. The right candidate will embrace the school’s visions and values to be an integral part of our team.

We believe that our Heads of Department have a pivotal role in inspiring and challenging pupils of every ability in every year to raise their academic standards, in promoting their confidence and self-esteem, and in securing year on year improving GCSE and post-16 results.

The school offers a broad range of Business and Computing courses and has a particularly strong and popular Sixth Form Business Studies programme. The number of Sixth Form students taking the subject has grown year on year. Our new Sixth Form centre offers state-of-the-art facilities. It is used extensively by students studying Business Studies and Computer Science in Key Stage 5. We have an established Young Enterprise Club as well as the Business and Computing lunchtime club.

About Us

Our Ofsted Report February 2020 says, “The school has a warm and welcoming atmosphere” and “Pupils at The Highcrest Academy happily live up to the school’s motto of ‘aspire and achieve’”.

All who work at the academy reinforce our six virtues linked to our motto (Ambition, Sensitivity, Purpose, Integrity, Resilience and Eloquence), helping us instil a culture of excellence that runs throughout every strand of our Academy.

Situated in the leafy Chilterns and within easy reach of Central London, Highcrest is culturally and academically diverse and is the only academy in Buckinghamshire that caters for students of ‘all abilities’. Some of our students need all your support, whilst others need to be challenged and stretched. Our inclusive and successful House system and a wide range of clubs, visits and trips help to bring our whole school community together.

There are approximately 1,000 students on roll, including the Sixth Form. Recent additions to our site include a gym and restaurant/coffee shop for both staff and students, as well as a purpose-built Sixth Form Centre.

In Return

Highcrest offers a comprehensive induction and an extensive personalised CPD plan for all staff. HODs are expected to attend a leadership development programme designed to prepare them emotionally and professionally for Senior Leadership. In addition, we are an outward-facing school with regard to liaising with neighbouring schools, having developed partnerships with PiXL and other networks to further enhance the professional experiences of our HODs.

Staff feel very well supported by senior leaders. According to staff, they feel valued because senior leaders are approachable…”. Ofsted Report February 2020

A thriving and friendly academy in the heart of the community, with staff recognition schemes and free gym and staff sports teams to counter the free breakfast, “Friday Treats” and on-site coffee shop! We also offer the possibility of shared staff living accommodation and on-site parking.

Indeed, we value a strong work ethic and aim to develop, sometimes hidden or unsuspected talent, into fruition.

At Highcrest, we are committed to setting high expectations for the conduct of our pupils and believe it is crucial for there to be an established culture in which all are able to excel. We want all the children who come to the academy to enjoy their learning and to become thoughtful, articulate, confident and responsible members of society.

Our personalised curriculum is enhanced by numerous extra-curricular opportunities, community and business projects, national and international competitions and a thriving House System. This encourages staff and students of all ages to work together.

The Highcrest Academy is the only all-ability academy in Buckinghamshire and is a culturally diverse, over-subscribed school, making it a fantastic place to teach. There are approximately 1000 students on roll, including Sixth Form. We know from pupil surveys that students are proud of our school and, when parents have been surveyed, the level of parent satisfaction has also been exceptionally high.

We are very aware that The Highcrest Academy is part of a community and we work hard to instil a sense of local and global responsibility. This means that students take part in many activities which enhance the local community, and have a real understanding of their role in improving the work community.

Our mission is to create a positive, secure and happy learning environment where all students experience success, friendship, respect and self-worth; where students value and celebrate the diverse talents and cultural heritage of all, and achieve their full potential in becoming responsible citizens, respecting the rights of other and contributing to our society.
