About The English School

THE ENGLISH SCHOOL, NICOSIA, CYPRUS

The School was founded in 1900 by the Rev. Canon Frank Darvall Newham as a multi-communal School.  It is now under the general direction of the Board of Management appointed by the Council of Ministers of the Government of Cyprus.  It has approximately 1,100 pupils (boys and girls) aged 11 to 18.  The majority are Greek Cypriot but there is also a significant Turkish Cypriot element and quite a number of non-Cypriot origin.  It is a selective school with competitive Entrance Examinations for a Year 1 intake of 144.

The Board of Management hopes to make the School a truly multi-cultural institution where respect for diversity and tolerance will be the norm, and to that end a number of measures have been taken or will be taken in the near future.

The School year is from September to June, with two-week holidays at Christmas and Orthodox Easter.  This is a fee-paying day school with classes on Monday to Friday from 7.40 a.m. to 1.40 p.m..  There are approximately 100 full-time and part-time teaching staff, all highly qualified, plus 20 administrative and support staff.  The Senior Leadership Team consists of the Head Teacher, a Deputy Head Teacher and five Senior Teachers, each with defined responsibilities.

The academic standard is very high, following the British educational system (AS, A2) with the vast majority of students proceeding to British Universities.  The aim of the School is to give students the opportunity to acquire a solid foundation of general knowledge, the specialist qualifications for further studies and, more importantly, the ability to study and think independently and critically.

There is an extensive range of supervised extra-curricular activities and much importance is attached to the students’ participation, both locally and abroad.  Through full involvement in the academic, artistic, recreational, sporting and social life of the School, opportunity is given for maximum development of the student’s individual personality, initiative and a sense of personal and social responsibility.

The School is situated in spacious wooded grounds about 2 miles from the centre of Nicosia.  There are good sports facilities, futsal pitches, a well-stocked library, specialist subject rooms, and a recently built Science Building.  Plans are under way for a new wing to house additional classrooms and subject rooms.

The premises also house the English Institute, which offers almost exclusively English Language courses to approximately 500 non-English School pupils between the ages 8 to 18.  These courses are taught by separate part-time staff.
