Job overview

Head of Chemistry for September 2022

The Science Department

King Edward’s is looking to appoint a dynamic and forward-thinking Head of Chemistry to work alongside the Heads of Biology and Physics. From September 2022 all three Heads of Department will report to a new Director of Science who will be responsible for the overall leadership of science. This is an exciting opportunity to lead Chemistry in the school. The role would ideally suit either an ambitious and experienced Teacher who has held management or leadership responsibilities, or a current Head of Department seeking a new challenge.  The School is happy to consider applications from either type of candidate and is also happy to support candidates who wish to progress to a Senior Leadership position in due course.

The Department

Science is taught in mixed ability forms in Year 7 before being set from Year 8 onwards. In Year 9 GCSE classes are set and the expectation is that the vast majority of pupils will be entered for Triple Award, although each year one or two sets will be entered for the Double Award. The Head of Department and Director of Science will liaise closely over the setting and make-up of the groups.  At A Level the department currently runs approximately three sets of each science in Year 12 and in Year 13.

Future Provision

The department has been well led and managed by the outgoing Head of Chemistry who is moving on to a promotion. Results are strong and the pupils experience and support for them is also excellent.

King Edward’s continues to be popular and is oversubscribed.  This trend is set to continue and the school is looking to expand and reorganise the existing science facilities over the coming years so that each department has its own building: the new multi-million sports hall will provide an opportunity to repurpose the old one as a Design and Engineering block to house Physics. This in turn will provide separate buildings for Chemistry and Biology.

The Governors are keen to appoint a candidate who will be able to:

• continue to maintain and improve standards in Chemistry.

• continue to encourage a love and passion for science and Chemistry in particular

• continue to encourage the department’s extra-curricular work in particular supporting medical and veterinary students in their preparation for University applications.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be personally responsible for ensuring the fulfilment of the job description but it is anticipated that the candidate will use the human and physical resources available to them to delegate effectively and provide strong leadership to drive the department forward.

 Appointment - September 2022

 Teaching

The Head of Chemistry will be an outstanding teacher and will be expected to teach a timetable that will include Year 7 through to Year 13.  All Heads of Department receive a management allocation of approximately 4-5 periods on top of their normal 10% PPA allocation. A timetable of 38/50 periods is normal.  All teaching staff also have a tutor group.
