St Mary’s Calne is looking for a highly committed, passionate science leader to further develop and deliver our unique and enriching knowledge-led academic Chemistry programme.
Science is central to the success of the school and we are looking for a talented individual who has belief in the ability of all the students to succeed in Science. We emphasise teaching the subject first and resist the demands to teach to the test. We need a subject leader who will strive for excellence in all aspects of teaching and learning, and who can continue to inspire the department to take the pupils on a journey from basic scientific ability to flourishing young scientists, forging new and interesting pathways and networks.
In 2018 St Mary’s Calne became the first independent school in the country to be awarded the Platinum Science Mark which celebrates outstanding practice in the curriculum, leadership and management, and learning and teaching. Our teaching is based on the Big Ideas in Science: the curriculum is designed to be both engaging and challenging and aims to foster curiosity, a deep understanding of the connections between the different disciplines and a desire to continue with the scientific studies both at A Level and beyond.
Housed in a separate science block, 13 members of teaching staff, supported by a team of technicians, deliver lessons in five well-equipped laboratories. There are two further teaching rooms dedicated to Science and Psychology alongside our bio-diverse outdoor ‘classroom’; the orchard.
Opportunities beyond the classroom are available across the sciences ranging from in-house clubs, to trips, overseas expeditions and partnerships with local schools.
What we want from you
• University Graduate with a degree in Chemistry or a Chemistry related discipline
• Qualified teacher with an ability to teach Chemistry Year 7 to A Level
• Ability to support students looking to study Chemistry and related disciplines at Oxbridge
• Excellent communication skills
• Motivation to work with young people
• Positive attitude and approach to change and development
• Willingness to participate in and expectation of contribution to the wider life of a boarding school and extra-curricular life
• The ability to tutor girls and be pastorally aware of their needs
• The ability to teach Biology and/or Physics (desirable but not essential)

About St Mary's Calne
St Mary’s Calne is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, a happy, purposeful and flourishing community of around 360 pupils with a 80% to 20% boarding to day ratio.
Founded in 1873, the school has been providing an outstanding education for girls for 150 years, and our alumnae have prominent positions in every profession from the law, politics and medicine to the arts, drama and sport. There is a strong tradition of the core academic subjects and strength in science and mathematics, as well as modern languages, arts and humanities.
