Job overview

Head of Department for Secondary Maths/Computing

(Teacher of Mathematics and possibly ICT in IGCSE)

Start August 2020

SIS is a reasonably young group of schools that opened its doors in August 2012 with a founding campus in Penang. Since then, our school in Penang has grown rapidly but still retains the advantages of a small school, most notably the family feel and the warmth of the community. For the coming year, we seek to fill the following position;

• Head of Department for Secondary Maths/Computing (Teacher of Mathematics and possibly ICT in IGCSE) (UK experience preferred)

We are particularly keen to accept applications from candidates who are research engaged and strong in CPD. This post would suit ambitious individuals keen for career development and with outstanding initiative and drive. The role is predominantly teaching Mathematics at this stage and may include some computing teaching but this is not confirmed – the role may only be Secondary Mathematics teaching depending on the candidate. IGCSE Mathematics experience is essential. Candidates with Computing/ICT experience would be preferred but not essential.

As a school, we pride ourselves on the level of care we give to our students. The motto, ‘Not for me, Not for you, But for us,’ really captures what we are trying to do. We aim to combine academic rigour with a keen sense of kindness, personal responsibility and determination to overcome challenges.

We therefore need staff that work hard, stay flexible and are resilient in the face of challenges. We value staff who will do all they can to push the school forward, be proactive and have the interests of the wonderful students at heart. In return, they will find fantastic children, the personal freedom to be innovative in what they teach and the trust to help develop the school and shape its future.

The quality of life in Penang is very high and it offers a wide range of activities and food to try. Penang has long served as the link between Asia’s great kingdoms and an important outlet to the markets of Europe and the Middle East. At its heart is diverse, cosmopolitan George Town, Penang Island's main city and an urban centre that delivers old-world Asia in spades. Malaysia is often referred to as ‘easy Asia’, as you can stroll through streets filled with exceptional art, amazing cafes and interesting shops. In contrast, you can visit one of the many western malls that house stores from the UK, Australia and the US. It is voted as one of the top ten places in the world to live!

Our salaries are competitive, and our staff, although perhaps paid less than in the UK, have good savings potential. Accommodation allowance is provided and the quality of life here is excellent. We believe that everyone should enjoy coming to school!

Deadline for application is Thursday 26th March, 2020.

MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 3 YEARS OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE TO MEET MALAYSIAN IMMIGRATION VISA REQUIREMENTS.

Interviews shall be held initially by Skype the week beginning Monday 30th March, 2020.  A second interview may also occur. The school shall however, reserve the right to interview and appoint earlier if an appropriate candidate applies.

Straits International School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all the students in our care and expects all applicants to share this commitment. We follow safer recruitment practices which are aligned to the recommendations of the International Task Force on Child Protection. We hold ourselves to a high standard of effective recruiting practices with specific attention to child protection. All appointments are subject to a CV and qualification checking, interview, identity checks, criminal record checks, and successful references.

A fascinating fusion of the East and West, Penang embraces modernity while retaining its traditions and old world charm. These are reflected in its harmonious multiracial populace and well-preserved heritage buildings which led to George Town being accorded a listing as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site recently.

Straits International School benefits from a highly professional, committed and hardworking staff. We seek to appoint staff who are committed to working as part of a team, sharing expertise and subscribing to the vision and ethos of the school, based upon academic rigour, community spirit and service. Working as part of the Straits Team is professionally challenging and equally rewarding. Our pupils are delightful, motivated, enthusiastic and eager to learn. They deserve only the very best that we, as teachers, can offer. Our experienced and committed staff give generously of their time, patience and humour, contributing to the success of the school at every level.

Staff turnover has been very low in our first three years of operations. Now, as we open a new campus in Rawang, as well as expand our current school in Penang, the time has come to greatly increase our senior leadership team. We hope you will join us.

Quotes from New Teachers

"This is not only my first teaching post in Asia but the first time I have even been here. It is all new to me but working at Straits is a wonderful experience and a great opportunity. The staff have been so helpful and welcoming, and the students are amazing! I may be learning more from them than they are from me!"  Harriet Glover, French Teacher.

"Working here at Straits has been a fresh challenge for me, as I now teach both Drama and Music, alongside new responsibilities around school. However, it's a fun challenge. What I noticed from day one, is that the pupils really do live up to the expectations of the school motto: they work hard to benefit all members of the school community, not just themselves. I am enjoying teaching pupils who are enthusiastic and engaged, and who have made me feel so welcome. I'm also continuing to explore what Penang has to offer, following advice from staff and pupils alike." Ellie Saunders, Performing Arts Teacher.
