Job overview

Head of Department for Maths - Rugby, Warwickshire

Salary: £competitive to attract the best

Starting: September 2018

Rugby Free Secondary School (RFSS) is an 11-19 free school that opened in the town in September 2016. The school is led by an inspirational Headteacher and has already proved very popular with parents. RFSS benefits from the backing of a highly supportive local authority and the local MP who both supported the establishment of Rugby Free Primary School, which opened successfully in September 2015.

The school is set in a fascinating context in a town that already has high quality provision including three Outstanding selective schools and a world-famous independent school. The aspiration within the Trust is that RFSS will match (and aim to better) the outcomes from these schools. In doing so, this will benefit our students greatly and define the career of all those that work at the school. RFSS will be non-selective, non-denominational, available to young people from all backgrounds and free to attend. RFSS will have a clear focus on STEMM, that being the core STEM subjects with the addition of Music to enrich the culture and ethos of the school and to capitalise on the proven link between wider academic achievements arising from engagement with music.

As one of our Heads of Department, you will be empowered to build provision in your subject area. From curriculum to staffing, from resources to reporting, your talent for teaching and planning will be applied and developed year on year as your department grows. At the heart of your success will be the fact that you are an outstanding practitioner with a mastery of your subject matched only by your passion for raising attainment and ability to inspire excellence in students and colleagues. Your ambition for our children will be matched by the school’s ambition for you. We would expect your progression to be rapid as is common in new schools that place greater responsibility on its founding staff members.

You are likely to be working in a Good or Outstanding school and will be able to evidence how you have contributed to raising standards and exceptional results in your subject area with a similar inclusive intake. Your passion for our STEMM approach will shine through, your communication skills will be exceptional and you will bring a wealth of ideas to build upon and take forward what is already a clear vision for the school.

You will be supported at every stage by a focused Academy Trust that brings experience in opening a number of successful free schools. You will also get a once in a career opportunity to contribute to specifying, staffing and leading a brand new school.

To arrange a visit to school or an informal discussion with the Head, please call Cathy Pierce, the Headteacher’s PA on 01788 222060 or email catherine.pierce@rugbyfreesecondary.co.uk

Welcome to Rugby Free Secondary School

‘Pupils benefit from a school community that includes pupils from a wide range of different backgrounds and cultures. There is a culture in which pupils see these differences as a positive thing. Uniqueness is valued and celebrated. Pupils feel confident ‘to be themselves’ at Rugby Free Secondary School. (Ofsted ‘Good’: July 2021)’

At Rugby Free Secondary School, we aim to foster kindness and pride, whilst maximising our academic and personal potential. We believe that all of our students should be happy and safe, whilst demonstrating the limitless endeavour and resilience required to succeed by striving for excellence. To achieve these goals, our school ethos is underpinned by the foundations of mutual respect, positive relationships and genuine curiosity. This is encompassed in our educational philosophy of creating more articulate, organised and progressive learners, and the desire to create both independent and collaborative learners who are proud to be educated at Rugby Free Secondary School. Alongside this, we focus on broadening our students’ core subject knowledge and understanding of the wider world. As a consequence, quality-first Teaching and Learning is at the centre of our school’s ethos, and is the key priority for all staff. Our aim is for teachers to deliver high-quality lessons to all year groups, whilst also being supported to develop through pertinent and purposeful internal and external CPD that is bespoke. Learning is integral to everything we do at RFSS. We ensure that all of our students, regardless of gender, ethnicity or ability, receive the best possible learning experiences, to enable them to achieve and maximise their potential. Here at RFSS, we continually support students to develop a love of learning to help them become learners for life, in order to equip them with the knowledge and skills that they will need in the real-world. This is also the case with our teaching staff, who continuously develop and update their own pedagogical practices, through Action Research projects and other bespoke professional development sessions.
