Hackney New School (HNS) is a community school in east London, close to Haggerston overground train station. We are looking for a Head of Department for Religious Studies for an April 2021 start.

We would like to appoint someone who is keen on their subject and enjoys teaching first and foremost.

HNS has embarked on a journey to become outstanding. It is now being led by Charlotte Whelan and a highly experienced and skilled leadership team drawn from across the Community Schools Trust. Charlotte oversaw the transformation of Forest Gate Community School (Newham) from Requires Improvement to Outstanding in three years. We have the aim of making HNS the best school in Hackney and are already making headway as we work towards this goal.  We received positive feedback from Ofsted’s recent visit to the school in November 2019 with the key points summarised below:

‘Pupils and staff say that the school is now a different place.’

‘In a short space of time, the new headteacher, trust CEO and senior leaders have created a calm place to learn. Pupils’ behaviour is improving.’

‘Leaders have put in place systems and structures to teach pupils how to behave respectfully. Pupils follow school routines at the start of the day and following break and lunchtimes. This enables lessons to begin in an orderly way.’

‘Leaders and managers are taking effective action to improve behaviour and secure consistently positive attitudes to learning. Safeguarding arrangements are effective.’

At HNS we offer excellent staff support and leadership development, good career progression opportunities and a friendly and dedicated approach to school leadership.

We are a forward-thinking school that has dispensed with formal lesson observations, retrospective book marking and written student exam reports but we have very high standards of care and outcomes. Behaviour is fast improving and our students are embracing the new school culture and are keen to progress.

We prefer candidates who are organised, friendly, and who possess a positive work ethic. Having a few good ideas is always welcome. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to be part of a team which will lead HNS to outstanding and play a key role in helping to transform HNS.

If you join us you will be part of an aspirational, committed and hardworking team that will look after you and help you progress in your career, with numerous opportunities for career progression across the Community Schools Trust.

Please note we will only be able to consider references from candidates with QTS and who can attend an interview in person.

For more information about the post please contact Ms Grace Travis by emailing gracetravis@hackneynewschool.org or calling 020 7617 7181 .

Completed applications should be submitted by 10:00 on Thursday 25th February. Interviews will take place the week after.  Early applications are encouraged and we reserve the right to interview and appoint in advance of closing date.

Hackney New School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. In order to meet this responsibility, we follow the government's Safer Recruiting Guidelines and all appointments will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and satisfactory references.
