Job overview

We are looking for a Head of English as an Assisted Language (EAL) with a passion for education. The post will suit a well-qualified and experienced individual, committed to delivering an exceptional learning experience for every pupil and leading a core department in the school. EAL is a successful subject at Woldingham, with most overseas students having language support lessons through Key Stage 3. At GCSE level, the school also offers iGCSE English as a Second Language and this course is delivered by the Head of EAL. The Department consists of the Head of Department and two highly committed part-time members of staff who work with a focus on equipping students with a strong language base and who encourage independent learning. There is a very strong culture across the Department of sharing resources and ideas.

The department aims to ensure that each girl acquires the necessary language skills to achieve their best possible results so we endeavour to have small groups and provide a minimum of three lessons a fortnight to support students with their language development. The department is very well resourced and up-to-date exam preparation textbooks are available for PET, FCE, CAE, IGCSE and IELTS. We also have a large stock of past papers, ESL resource books and files with extension activities for each of the year groups. In addition, there is a wide range of supplementary ESL books, graded readers, dictionaries, CD-ROMs, language board games and online learning tools. The EAL classroom also counts with a state-of-the-art interactive whiteboard and a touch screen laptop equipped with IWB software.

The ability to support students in their language learning across all Key Stages and up to iGCSE is essential, combined with first-rate organisational, team working and ICT skills.

Woldingham is a happy and successful Catholic boarding and day school for girls aged 11 to 18 and is firmly established as one of the top girls’ independent schools in the UK, outperforming many schools that are far more selective in their admissions process. Central to this achievement is Woldingham’s academic enrichment and extra-curricular programmes, pastoral support and caring community. Close to London, yet in an outstandingly beautiful rural setting, Woldingham has a strong community and culture building on a proud heritage that stretches back 175 years. We are committed to an exciting future that is underpinned by fresh ideas, an innovative spirit and state-of-the-art facilities.

Salary: Competitive. All staff receive free lunches and refreshments.

Please visit our website to download an application form by clicking on the Apply button. Once completed, return it to hr@woldinghamschool.co.uk with a supporting letter  no later than 9am on 20 March 2019. Interviews will be held on 26 March 2019.

Woldingham School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS report will be required for the successful candidate.

Professional development and staff welfare

Our professional team of staff is Woldingham’s greatest asset, and we want to ensure that everyone is supported to work in an effective, enjoyable and fulfilling way. Staff Development is a high priority, with induction and mentoring programmes for Newly Qualified Teachers and new colleagues, plus an annual cycle of Personal Professional Development planning for all colleagues.

We offer excellent benefits including free lunch. Staff are welcome to use our range of outstanding facilities including the gym, squash and tennis courts and the swimming pool. Our Staffroom Committee organises regular social events, and individual members of staff have even organised yoga classes and reflexology on site.
