Job overview

Head of Early Years

Established 76 years ago, Markham College is an independent, coeducational, non-profit, school for children 3-18 years of age. Our mission is to develop leaders in all fields who make a positive difference. Our curriculum is underpinned by the pillars of academic and creative endeavour, character development and service learning. Markham is a regional leader in education whose forward-thinking and self-improving approach ensures our children are central to every decision we make regarding their learning experiences.

We are currently looking for a Head of Early Years to start in August 2023 or earlier. Candidates should be qualified to degree level, hold a teaching qualification and have significant overseas experience in a leadership role. They should be passionate about student learning and have the drive and commitment to inspire both students and teachers. These professional attributes should be combined with exceptional communication and leadership skills, enabling the new Head of Early Years to play a prominent role in the school community and be a respected ambassador for Markham College.

The post holder will have shared responsibility for over 400 students, a large number of local and overseas staff and a significant budget.  He/she will report directly to the Head of College but will have considerable autonomy in the day to day running of the Early Years Section. Markham’s Monterrico Campus houses both the Early Years building and Primary building. We have started the construction of an innovative, state-of-the-art Primary School which will be completed in 2024. The Early Years pedagogy must make use of innovative learning spaces. The FS1 (age 3) and Kindergarten classes have individual classrooms with a shared outdoor space. The two FS2 (age 4) units are open plan with four rooms and three classes in each, accommodating approximately 75 children per unit. Our Primary section follows the PYP curriculum and the methodology of the Early Years section should create a smooth transition to this model.

Spanish language ability is desirable but not essential. The successful candidate should be able to commit to the College for a period of not less than six years although the initial contract will be for a period of three years. A highly competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with the seniority of the position will be offered.

As a member of the College’s Senior Education Team the Head of Early Years will lead the development of this section of the school as well as contributing to school-wide strategic planning. (See attachment for a full Person Specification and Job Description).

To apply, a covering letter and CV of no more than 3 pages should be uploaded to the school’s system (https://jobs.markham.edu.pe) by Monday, January 30th, 2023.

Established in 1946, Markham College is a regional influence in South America  for educational leadership and academic excellence. We are an independent, non-profit, co-educational school that provides bilingual education to children from 3-18 years of age at our Miraflores and Surco campuses in Lima Peru.

Markham has a British heritage and international perspective. We have an adapted British Curriculum that respects our distinct Peruvian setting. Our Early Years bilingual programme starts at 3 years old and leads them towards IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma examinations. Our IB program, with over 29 courses, gives students the tools to succeed in universities world wide. We encourage diversity and support passion by allowing our students and staff to choose from over 100 different extracurricular activities and sports.

Our mission is to support children to become leaders in their chosen fields and be agents of change in Peru and the world. To achieve this, our curriculum is underpinned by the pillars of academic and creative endeavour, character development and service learning. Consequently, we have several features that make Markham special and unique. Our outdoor education programme and social programmes ensure that students receive a balanced and rounded education focusing on how they can make a difference in society. Furthermore, our student leadership programme means our children are a central part of the decision making process with regard to their learning experiences.

Markham teachers play a role in the pastoral care of our children. Supporting our students' emotional, psychological, and physical development as well as their academic growth throughout their Markham journey.

Peru´s rich cultural history and its amazing territory offers a wealth of opportunities for unforgettable experiences. Over 3000 km of Pacific Ocean coastline through the majestic Andean high peaks to the vast Amazon rainforest provide an infinite number of places, sports and adventures.

Markham is a non-profit school which allows us to offer salaries, infrastructure and materials that are aligned with international standards. Early Years and Primary are located on our Monterrico 27,778 m2 campus. Which houses our newest state-of-the-art educational facility which reflects the school's advanced pedagogic approach.

Markham has moved away from the traditional four-wall classroom, by developing flexible learning spaces that encourage independent learning in different environments. Teachers are developing new ways of working and collaborating across groups and disciplines in our ‘Learning Communities’ which give students at Markham more autonomy and choices in planning and executing their learning journey.
