Job overview

Rossall School is among the most successful and prestigious independent boarding and day schools in the North West with flourishing pupil numbers.

With an enticing and highly aspirational culture, Rossall School is offering opportunities for exceptional educators to come and work with supremely talented, inspiring and compassionate professionals to teach our hard working, ambitious and delightful pupils.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an aspirational mathematics practitioner to join a school that puts Mathematics at the heart of academic provision within and beyond the classroom.

The Head of Elite Mathematics and Outreach will be responsible for leading on the development of mathematical experiences beyond the classroom. They will be the second in the department and deputise for the Head of Mathematics.

We are looking for someone who has the drive and passion to enrich the mathematical experiences of pupils through the organisation of events, competitions, workshops, masterclasses, trips and outreach activities. The ideal candidate would be able to take the very top mathematicians well beyond the scope of the curriculum, inspiring them to pursue excellence and experience success on a national and international stage.

The successful applicant will be a qualified teacher and should be able and willing to teach Maths from KS3 up to A Level standard. Experience of the International Baccalaureate is desirable though not essential.

The subject is mostly taught in sets. Pupils work towards the Edexcel IGCSE in Mathematics with virtually all sitting the Higher Tier paper. A recent redesign of the KS3 curriculum has been undertaken to offer greater challenge and faster progress whilst building the strong foundations necessary to begin the IGCSE in year 9. In the Sixth form we offer A-Level Maths and Further Maths as well as teaching the subject at Higher and Standard Level in the IB. All colleagues are encouraged to teach across the age, ability and course range.

Some of our international students study Maths in dedicated classes as part of our offer for the Sixth Form preparation programme; there are approximately 30 students following a one-year IGCSE course which prepares them for Sixth Form study with us. Some younger students in Years 7 to 10 occasionally have separate lessons too due to their exceptional talent.

Pupils are encouraged to participate in a number of mathematical competitions, the most common of which are those run by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT). Pupils take part in both the individual written paper competitions as well as the Senior and Junior Team events. We have had great success in recent years and the feats of our successful pupils have been an inspiration to others. In recent years we have also been participating in the National Cipher Competition, which has proved popular with our older pupils.

The department is well resourced and from September 2024 every classroom will have an interactive television, as well as a large office for resources. The use of ICT in teaching is enabled and encouraged and all pupils have access to a learning device in the lesson (Years 7 - 11 pupils have a personal device).

Pupils at Rossall enjoy Mathematics, and a significant proportion choose to continue to study it in the Sixth Form, with healthy numbers opting each year for Further Maths. An encouraging number of students go on to study Mathematics and related subjects at universities across the UK and the rest of the World.
